: How does an intercooler effect your egt?do you really know?
isuzu4jb1t 12-12-2006, 02:50 AM we all know that intercooler help increase power by making the incoming air charge cooler hence descer hence more oxygen to burn more diesel,so lets say an unintercooled diesel produce less oxygen(hot air) and it cause more incomplete cumbustion or oxygen starvation, this causes black smoke or higher egt,WHY?incomplete combustion due to oxygen stavation produces less power@ less heat, less diesel is burned.
the more oxygen you pump in (cooler denser air)the more diesel you burn the more heat and power hence the lower your egt.???huh!!!
And how is it that running rich on diesel causes high egt if its not being burned,,(help,i was thrown this q"s and i was caught off guard)
2500hd05 12-12-2006, 01:48 PM with a diesel the air/fuel mixture is not as important. look at it this way if you half burn 1gal of fuel you make say 100units of heat. if you completly burn 1/3gal of fuel you make the same heat and same power. so by dumping in extra fuel that only half burns you are making less power then you could have with less fuel but it still makes the same amount of heat.
also the cooler intake air helps cool of the combustion. extra fuel burns longer too, sometimes it can be burning well after the turbo, this is what makes the egts higher. it is the fuel that is still burning after it left the combustion camber. so if you can burn it all in the camber then no fuel can be burned after it has left leaving the heat in the camber where it belongs.
the more fuel you add the more power a diesel will make. the more unburned fuel in the chamber the hotter the egts.
you also have to figure that with no intercooler then the intake air temp is also much higher so you are starting hotter then you would if you had a intercooler.
hope this helps.

I haven't the slighest clue as to what those letters make.

packratt 12-12-2006, 08:06 PM How does an intercooler affect MPG?
isuzu4jb1t 12-12-2006, 08:55 PM "also the cooler intake air helps cool of the combustion. extra fuel burns longer too, sometimes it can be burning well after the turbo, this is what makes the egts higher it is the fuel that is still burning after it left the combustion camber"
could you say that it's like trying to boil a pot of water with one candle which produce X temp, the adding say 20 candle producing 20 X temp, where by the heat of the candle is the same but buy adding more candle rate of speed it achieve this temp is faster?
so diesel cumbustion temp is a constant then,so having an intercooler moves this constant down to start of with,so in the event that diesel is still burning well after the turbo, this constant will be lower am i right?,
"so if you can burn it all in the camber then no fuel can be burned after it has left leaving the heat in the camber where it belongs."
this is where you play around with the injection timing right?
nwpadmax 12-12-2006, 10:02 PM You're confusing way too many topics.
Adding an intercooler to an engine without one will simply cool the intake charge, provide more oxygen to the cylinder, and will also lower EGTs.
Now a lot of people add more fuel after the fact, but that's a topic unto itself.
An intercooler by itself only cools the intake air.
2500hd05 12-12-2006, 11:28 PM to sum it up the intercool helps the fuel get burned in the chamber.
samfraser 12-12-2006, 11:30 PM i like intercoolers ):h
2500hd05 12-13-2006, 12:11 AM was this a question for school or something? the follow up question is what got me.
samfraser 12-13-2006, 01:22 AM was this a question for school or something? the follow up question is what got me.
i like them, no question just stating a fact.
isuzu4jb1t 12-13-2006, 02:37 AM no its not for school, and its not all about intercooler but what actually happens, and all the effects that happens when an intercooler gets installed.i its nice to know in detail what actually happens,it'll help alot when trying to tune etc.i will analise the good answers you all give me and try and throw in some more, its just to see how much we all know, its good for every body who loves diesels.
