I know that this has been brought up before but has any one really cked the edge for correctness. i was up getting a tree in the deep snow and was getting on the power quite a bit(3/1) when the alarm came on for engine temp! it said it was way way hot 255 (should have been watching but i was trying to keep the rig away from the cliff) there was no boiling over of coolant! and no light came on on the dash!! dash temp was 210
only took a very very short time to cool once i stopped with the electric fans. and it did not smell hot!

I have hit the 230 range pulling before ! and have backed down but my egts were never over 1150 dash engine temp was @205.again it did not smell hot.that was with the stock fan and i never heard it lock up! and yes I know what it sounds like.
I am not sure if i belive either gauge!

Any suggestions or am i just blowing smoke and should belive the edge if so i have magic motor that will never melt!

on my dodge the engine temp follows the egt! the egt allways goes to O.S. level before i have to worry about the engine!

Im not sure, but then again, im not so sure our factory temp guages are all that acurate. My stock guage always seems a little too high.

Tnate,
I'm one of the Beta testers and wanted to let you know that I am watching the Eng Temp indicator closely. With the newest version the Attitude display appears to be closer to my OE dash gauges. With that said, the OE Eng Temp gauge is about as useless as .... well you know what. It will be indicating something in the range of 190-195 and the Attitude will be indicating 187. So far the highest I have seen the Attitude go is 189 with OE gauge around 200. Which one is correct? Heck if I know because I haven't confirmed the accuracy of my sensor or sending unit.
Thought you deserved some info to your question though.

if its a lly id definately listen to the edge and worry about overheating.

My old Edge (still not returned form Edge) a couple times set off the coolant temp alarm when I most certainly wans't running hot. Set the alarm for EGT's too (1350 deg set) when the EGT's were not up. Just a glitch w/ the Edge I think.

The stock guage is not accurate, Edge is reading it right off the ECM. I would say you were toasty.

:exactly: I have run a Tech II plugged into the OBDII connector, and was monitoring the engine temp from both the TechII and the Attitude monitor, both read exactly the same. The factory gauge seems to be fairly accurate when up to normal operating temp, but is not very accurate during warm up.

thanks for everones ideas.
but here is the question outright!
How can i check the true engine temp? i dont belive ether gauge?
if i hooked the truck to the scanner it will read the same as the edge this does not mean that it is correct! they both read the same computer.
I have gotten several diesels hot in the past and known that they were hot (gauge, smell, proformance, exhaust, bubling coolant) but i do not belive that the burb was as hot as it said it was!

Does anyone know where the computer gets it's eng temp from!

thanks

Correct me if Im wrong, but you should be able to use a laser heat gun and shoot the thermostat housing and see the true temp at the thermostat. That is what I do with gasoline engines, so I'm sure it would serve to be true for diesels as well. And temp guns are readily available from sears for 50-60 bucks. Just a thought. :D
