: 4wd and new truck price
hdh828 12-11-2006, 12:50 PM I'm considering buying a new diesel truck GMC 2500HD . Should I consider 4wd on this truck or just buy a 2wd since I've never needed 4wd? Also, what would a fair price be for this truck in the San Antonio, Tx market; '06 GMC 2500HD SLE2 CC 4x4 . How can I get a better price for it? Sticker price is $45,093. Sales rep states maybe he can offer it at a little ovet $35,000. VIN is 1GTHK23D76F187976 . any help , info or suggestions will be appreciated. I'm looking to purchase near the end of this month.
Thanks
Blown98Roush 12-11-2006, 04:08 PM I'm not sure about prices out in Texas, but I'm in Florida and have been pricing trucks this past week. I am able to get the GMS (employee discount) plan and a '06 2500 CC D/A 4wd SLT with just about every option is $47,xxx. With the GMS plan, I can get it for $37,600. Therefore, if the sales rep will go down to a little over $35,000, you'll pretty much be getting it at their cost and I doubt you'll find one for much less, if any.
Hope this helps.
Mike_N 12-11-2006, 04:32 PM Reasons to buy 2WD (assuming you don't need 4WD):
1) lower initial cost
2) lower maintenance costs (no cv joints, u-joints, transfer case, etc)
3) lighter weight, better handling, better braking
4) fewer parts to break
5) better fuel economy
Reasons to buy 4WD:
1) higher resale value
2) higher ride height
3) if you ever need it, it's there
If it was me and I was going to keep the truck for a long time, I'd go with the 2WD. If you plan on trading it after a couple of years, resale considerations might make 4WD worthwhile.

In MAY - I was trying to do the same thing - buy a 2-wheel drive. Problem was - I could not locate one. I had a Chevy dealer who did a Chevy and GMC search - country wide. Found one in Michigan - and that dealer would not let it go. What I understand is the dealers very rarely order - for inventory, a 2-wheel drive.
With my supplier discount, plus discount for in stock on lot, plus Duramax rebate - It was actually CHEAPER for me to buy a fully loaded - on the lot vehicle - rather than order a 2-wheel drive.
Now - that was end of year - ordering one now MAY BE cheaper.
Also - resale of a 4x4 is much easier and has a better return.
90% of my use is towing - on a highway. I do not need 4x4.
But I ended up with one.

As for priceing in Tx, i cant help...
As for the 4x4, get 4x4. Not much money diffrence and besides, if you need it, its there...
gmcya 12-11-2006, 05:07 PM The reason why 4wd diesel trucks are so popular(in Louisiana anyway) is even if you do not offroad the truck the added weight of the engine will get you stuck on wet grass with street slicks on. I could not count how many times I had to pull a 2wd diesel to the road with my 01 Z while camping (including my own 01 PSD 2wd). Unless you stay 101% on blacktop around here 2wd is just not an option.
Wooter 12-11-2006, 05:39 PM when you get stuck in 2wd you will be glad you bought the 4x4. A press of a button and your out. well worth it in my opinion.

With trucks like these, 3/4 and 1 tons, diesel engines, you gotta have a 4x4!:D
Prostar8.20 12-11-2006, 08:31 PM What's really cool is when you forget your in 4wd after pulling a boat out and crank it down the turn pike with 10k load at 75 mph.
4 X 4 is real nice when you get into some mud and can't go. Its nice not having to depend on someone to pull you out. 4 X 4 is like a good wife...its there when you need it......
Z71offroader 12-11-2006, 10:27 PM a 2wd and 4wd have the same ride height to correct an earlier post.
dmaxscott 12-12-2006, 08:47 AM I have a friend Tom that bought a 2wd duramax in 2003, he just pulls his fiver and now to date he has been stuck 10 times or more. When ever he gets on wet grass or any sort of weather he can't get his fiver pulled off grass.
I've never had a 2wd so I have no idea how they ride or run but for me 4wd is the only way to go.
SUpachargd2k5 12-12-2006, 09:57 AM I say go for the 4x4

Been there and done that. Getting the boat up the ramp is one of the few times I need 4X4.

I ordered a 2wd with my supplier discount. It was no problem. I have been in sand towing my Jeep on a towmaster trailer...total weight on Jeep and trailer is near 7k lbs. I had to stop and start several times with no problem. I was a bit surprised myself, but that G80 locker worked great.
Hafft 12-12-2006, 05:55 PM no question about it ide go with 4x4. i dont even know why they make 2wd trucks

2 wheel drive trucks will get you just far enough off the road to really get stuck. Just when you say I think I can, I think I can, the tires start to spin and its all over with...

MGlickLBZ 12-13-2006, 04:29 PM 2wd will get you off the pavement and into the gravel. 4wd will get you stuck further from the pavement. I always looked at 4wd as an insurance policy, it's there when you need it.
DMAXER24045 12-14-2006, 05:09 AM I've had a '01 2wd for 5 years now. I bought it before I decided to visit Baja Mexico with my rig. I've towed my 10K 5'er to the desert (gulf) side of Baja many times. I've gotten stuck in the sand down there (in as little as three of inches of it, sometimes a bucking rear end in sand blown over the road), towing and not towing, just about as many times as I've been there. Luckily, I have 4wd friends to pull me out.
I now leave my 5'er down in Baja permanently and driving unattached I still get stuck occasionally, though I've definitely learned the limitations of 2wd. I am thinking of buying a new Duramax soon and you can bet if I do, it will be a 4wd.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Save yourself the embarasment of getting stuck in a brand new truck. Never known anyone with a 2wd truck who didn't need either a tow truck or a buddy with a 4wd at least once to get himself out. My Aunt had a 2wd and she couldn't even pull an 18ft speedboat up a boat-ramp on several ocassions. Had to call my parents to come rescue her boat. It was funny for us but definitely embarassing for her.
