: Specialty tools needed?
packratt 12-10-2006, 08:01 PM I just bought a 98 K3500 5sp 4x4 dually. I've been wrenching on family and friends vehicles for years so I have most tools needed for gasoline vehicles. Outside of our John Deere this is the first diesel I've had to work on.
Enough late model vehicles have turned up that a Snapon MT2500 is on the shopping list.
I'd like to start picking up necessary tools over an extended time so I can keep my tab down rather than have something break and buy a bunch at a time.
What specialty tools are needed for the 6.5TD?
Thanks
packratt
Turbine Doc 12-10-2006, 10:50 PM OPS socket, vacuum/pressure gauge, IP turning tool, IP S wrench for mounting nuts, dital volt meter, if 4x4 36mm socket to get off the oil filter 90 deg adapter, when o rings need replacing.
knkreb 12-11-2006, 06:21 AM There are some software programs for your computer with plug that can be had, depending upon your price range. I'm not sure of the function comparision between Tech2, MT2500, and software alternatives.
Turbine Doc 12-11-2006, 09:05 AM MT2500 is good if you already have one, its functions are limited to what the T2 can do, T2 drawback is that it is a GM only tool. If you don't have any tool give the Auto Engenuity a serious look, I'm looking myself rather than upgrade my Snap On to current year models, I stop at 2001 yr cartridge. AE tool in basic model covers all domestic mfrs OBDII code, some foreign models, and upgrade to professional model has full bi-directional capability with appropriate adapters all under $1K which is very competative to even a used Snap On tool
packratt 12-11-2006, 09:09 PM On the hand tools my Snapon catalog only lists for 6.2 diesel not 6.5 are they the same?
If so I'm figuring it should be
S6133 Pump adjusting tool
S8190A Injector Pump Wrench
Can't figure out which OPS socket
Is that a 36mm shallow, medium, or deepwell?
packratt 12-11-2006, 10:05 PM When it comes to scanners the T2 wouldn't work for me because I've got several Ferds I've got to work on.
Other than ability to stretch out the payments the biggest reason for getting one of the Snap-0n scanners is that I've got a friend with one (2 states away) who can give me over the phone coaching. I'd classify myself is advanced shade tree mechanic. I don't have any formal training so my diagnostic ability is week but if I know what is wrong and have a manual or can see how to do it I can fix it. Having the same equipment would make the coaching alot easier.
I'm going to assume that the Auto Enginuity you were talking about is http://www.autoenginuity.com/.
It looks pretty good. I don't have a laptop right now but do have a Palm that would work. I only have a use for the GM and Ford now so I could pick it up for Palm and PC for right at $600.
instarx 12-11-2006, 11:20 PM Snap-on injector socket would be handy.
DieselPro 12-11-2006, 11:37 PM 30mm injector socket, OPS (Oil Pressure Sensor) Socket, boost pressure gauge, fuel pressure gauge, 3/4" four way open end wrench for injector lines, and a cooler with 12 pack, optional muffler bearing grease packer.
BunGhoLeo 12-12-2006, 11:37 AM What's the part# for that snap-on injector socket? I remember seeing it before but i can't find it now.
packratt 12-12-2006, 12:05 PM If I'm reading my catalog correctly it's S6128
nvmtnlion 12-12-2006, 02:00 PM I have one I loan out if you would like to borrow it. My injectors are done for the next 100K or so. It is the snap-on one.
instarx 12-12-2006, 04:34 PM Yep, that's the right number. Here is the exact link to the socket. It isn't cheap, but at least Snap-on's shipping is free.

Dave12 12-12-2006, 04:52 PM I just used the OTC #5060 injector socket that I bought from delco diesel with my new injectors and glow plugs. It worked great. I has the hex top for putting a wrench on, if required.

BunGhoLeo 12-12-2006, 05:01 PM $44 for the socket that can make life a WHOLE lot easier doesn't sound that expensive to me :)
Thanks for the part#, i forgot they had it listed under the diesel section.
btw, snap-on is having a christmas special of 10% off.
instarx 12-12-2006, 05:25 PM Ha! Of course MY injectors needed replacing in the fall - they couldn't wait for Christmas!? :)
joispoi 12-13-2006, 07:29 AM for the ops socket, make sure that it's 6.5L specific. I bought the generic one off the rack at napa and had to frankenstein it to work.
DavidPhillips 12-13-2006, 08:13 AM part no. for ops socket?
Dave12 12-13-2006, 09:30 AM Looking at the Snap-on socket vs. the OTC socket that I bought. I'd definitely get the snap-on. The hex end on the snap-on looks much better (deeper/taller) and the price is the same.
The OTC worked fine with a ratchet and breaker bar but it looks like the snap-on would work better for using a wrench on the end.
Just FYI for anyone who's in the market for an injector socket.

packratt 12-13-2006, 08:05 PM Broke down and bought a trade in MT2500 with all the accessories and carts through 2001 for $600. To get the most out of the software based ones you need a laptop not palm and I don't have one. The MT2500 is also backward compatable with non OBDII vehicles of which I work on several.
In case you don't know Snap-on will only be producing updated carts for 2 more years. Current pricing on new to date carts is something like $895. I don't forsee having to work on anything newer than 2001 for several years. I'll update to the "newest" after they discontinue them and all the techs are trading in for the Modus's.
DieselDufus 12-14-2006, 04:32 PM OK now I'm curious...
Who out there is going to identify the OPS socket?
I looked at my OPS once...and decided it MUST be some kind of special socket to get to the stupid thing without taking off the lower intake.
So...whut duz it look like?
DavidPhillips 12-14-2006, 05:39 PM On mine it looks like a socket that can be turned with a wrench would work best. It's supposed to be 1 1/16" and 1" if that makes sense. Doesn't to me.
I'm looking for a 3 11/16" deep 1 1/16" 6 point socket
Not sure how deep it needs to be but that sounds like a good number
When I get home I'm taking my spare up to sears and see what fits.
Actually I'm pulling my intake anyway.

For my truck, it's an OPS socket with a chunk the size of your thumb whizzed out so it would clear the intake. I would like to see a bought one that would fit.
