I just got done reading about someone's problem with a PMD causing his engine to die. He took it to the dealer for PMD. It's under warranty, and they said they would have to change the whole pump. But, they said that that was not enough: you would have to change out the lift pump and have the tank pulled and cleaned, and that there would metal particles in the fuel. Those particles were said to orginate from the lift pump. All this extra work to be done at your expense.

I thought that it was just one dealer, but apparently more than one has done this. Anyone heard tell of such?

A dealer in New Jersey tried to pull the same thing on me last year. I told him to call GM and have them confirm this with me. He said that when he spoke to GM they said just replace the pump, no tank drain or clean, no lift pump. He said this was the first time that they told him that, he figured I had connections at GM, which I do not.

I think the dealers just try to generate extra $$ for themselves to make up for a lower GM reimbursement rate.

I think I've gotten the scoop on this. It applied to the older DS4 pumps (back in 94-95). A guy emailed me to tell me about it. The older pumps had steel rollers that would pit and send fragments to the fuel tank, thus contaiminating the whole fuel system. Now, if you have a newer pump, with ceramic rollers, that is not a problem. But, either the dealers who do this don't remember this right, or they do know what they are doing by running up the bill.

The worst problem they had with the steel rollers was keeping them in contact with the cam ring causing loss of power at high RPMs. Rare cases saw cam ring wear, and the updated ceramic rollers also included an updated cam ring and new shorter bolt to lock the optic sensor in place. The ligher ceramic ones are much easier to keep in constant contact and prevent wear. Extremely unlikely you will find a DS with steel rollers in it, only the 5067 pumps had them, and all the original black label pumps were scrapped and replaced with blue label pumps and ceramic rollers a decade ago. I'd say the dealer is definitely taking you for a ride.
