Ok guys I have heard all the stories about 6.5s blowing cranks and I was just wondering how far down the mod list i can go and still have a reliable truck??
Like what kind of numbers can you put down safely?
This crank thing is really the thing that is worring me the most cause i just got the truck and the parts are comin in the summer and i really dont wanna blow it up

One GM mechanic that changes a lot of them told me it had something to do with towing D9 Cats at 90mph.

I don't know, it's a scarry thought. I try not to worry about it.
I have seen claims of a faulty crank pulley causing it. Then there are claims that it is a weak crank.
I have also seen comments about a bad belt tensioner causing it.

I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone says the cummns is the greatest and I quess 1998-2001 there have been some block issues of cracking. And after my buddy bought a powerstroke he said he was doing some research and found they have broken some cranks as well(don't remember what years). It can happen to any of them. My Snap-on dealer had a 1998 dodge with a cummins had just over 100K on it and the headgasket blew and his was bone stock and the only thng he tows is a little trailer with his polaris on it.

i wouldnt worry about the crank blowing unless youre running more than 15psi boost. worry more about things like timing chains, preventitive maintance, etc... the cummins witht crack block issue are the "53" block i believe and its on a water passage on the side of the block. anyways back to the crank, you could blow the crank on anything if ya really wanted to but i wouldnt worry about it too much.
