I recently purchased a 2006 Chevy Silverdo 3500 and want to know if I can change my oil with synthetic instead of regular oil and if so is there a preferred brand? Thanks for any help.

How many miles are you at? Most say to not change to synthetic till after 10,000 miles. I would stick with that but of course, synthetic is the way to go IMO.

Edit: I use the ESSO XD-3 series in which only the 0w-30 and 0w-40 are synthetics but I live in a cold climate so I run the 0w-30 all year round. My other preffered brand would be Mobile if they had a light weight oil that was meant for diesels.

More important to do a few changes 1st to flush out the motor. You could do this with stnthetic but the cost would be to much.
I would do a 1000, 3000, and then 5000 change and dump the synthetic in at 5000.

That's kind of my philosophy too. You can go to syn whenever you want... look at the number of cars that come with it as factory fill.

But I also think it's good to change oil quickly the first 2 to 3 times..like 1000, 3000, and 5000 to let the assembly lubes out, and get rid of the shavings and bearing breakin material.

Since you've going to make such short oil runs anyway, there's no need to spend the $ for syn. But, it's not becuase syn is somehow not compatible with a new engine.

I have run Syn in everything I own (gas eng). I have switched to syn in my cars/trucks at 40.000 mi and as high as 140.000 with no problems. I run Mobil 1 in my street cars/trucks and Royal purple in my race car.Just my 3 cents

Amsiol here. Have run Mobil 1 in every gasser truck I have owned before this, and have never had a oil related failure. I had a K1500 w/287K on the odo before I sold it. Ran like a top, and started everytime.

I run the Amsoil 5w-40 I really like it seem to start better in the cold temps for me. Used to use Rotella 15w-40

TEACH32696,

Have you ever heard of Schaeffer's 9000 (5W-40) CI-4+? It's considered to be a very high quality motor oil, however, not too many folks have heard about it. If interested, you can read more on (bob is the oil guy.com). Very worthwile resource for lubrication related information.

Schaeffer's is locally available at AMP Performance (602-437-2727).

(Moderator: I hope passing this information along is not in violation of the website rules. I've seen it done, here, in the past so, thought it would be OK. I'm not affiliated with this company, in any way, other than I've purchased some of the oil that they sell. I'm just trying to give this person another option. Schaeffer's products are, sometimes, hard to find.)

I agree with synthetic I personally use Royal Purple in everything I've got. I usually let the factory oil stay in for 3000 miles then drain and put in synthetic need time to allow the rings to seat in IMO.

Those of you who switch over to synthetic motor oil from conventional oil, have you gain mileage between oil changes based on the computer monitoring system? I would like to know if the claims from these synthetic oil companies are true or not.

If you have gain mileage between oil changes, would you please post about how many miles have you gain?

Thanks,
TN09

I don't think you will gain mileage per the DIC as the computer doens't take oil samples. It merely takes into consideration the RPMs and how long at them, based with engine temps and what not to come up with how long it would last.
