I’m down to a bare 929 casting block. I wiped the bottom of the block and sprayed some “Contact Cleaner” on the machined areas. Then I went to the machine shop to pick up the heads that have half a million cracks in them and gave the shop the other set I have to clean and test. Upon my arrival back home I saw cracks in the block. Are these cracks ok or is this block shot. If it is shot I think I’m going to just scrape the whole d@&# truck and take a $1000.00 loss. The cracks are on the drivers side on the first and second main area. The pictures are the best I can get. The first two pics are the same crack, the second was sprayed with contact cleaner so as to remove the oil so it didn’t look like the Grand Canyon on film (the oil does make it look worst that it is I think). The other pics depict same cracks, they show front and back.

I've seen folks rebuild gasser small block 400's with cracks like that and did not have any problem. I doubt I would be so brave.

Add in the OUTRAGEOUS mechanical forces the diesel produces within the block and I'd say you'd better listen to CR.

so you guys sayin this block is no good. Cause if so I ain't messin with it anymore. two bad blocks four bad heads. That alone will cost me thousands in new parts. Guess the next thing to do is sell off what works unless you guys have another route for me to go. I got 2 good fuel pumps, 8 nice pistons, 2 intakes, 2 4l80E trannies that worked just fine, a solid running turbo, cams, crank shaft so on and so forth. Anytakers? I was hoping the 6.5 would allow me to park and rebuild my 351 gasser guess that isn't gonna happen. If I'm lucky I can recoup some of my money and start my next (long over due) project. Actually they make terrible boat anchors.

What causes that to happen?

This block appears to have cracked from the threadhole out, most likely it hydrolocked inside the threads and spread out.

Bummer.

So maybe head gasket or cracked head was the start of it?

I guess I have no other options but to scrap the block.
