: Speedometer acting funky???!!!!
AndyB 12-08-2006, 11:44 AM My wife has been using the truck since our last snowfall and while following her home, we were passing cars, going about 70, when all of a sudden she slams on the brakes! The rest of the trip, she drove about 40. When we got home, I asked her what she was doing??? She said that the speedometer said she was going 110 and that is when she hit the breaks. After stopping, she realized that the speedo was not correct as it was stuck on 30 after she stopped.
Well, I took the truck for a drive and could not figure out what was happening. I turned the truck off, then started it up again. I noticed that the speedo dropped about 5 mph. So I shut it down and started it up about 5 or 6 times and the speedo corrected itself. Has this ever happened to anyone else?? Should I be getting ready for more electrical problems?
My previous truck was a Ford gasser and my brother has a Ford diesel. My truck had 150,000 miles on it and my brothers has close to 200,000 miles on it. Neither one has had ANY problems. After some of the electrical issues, interior rattling, and poor quality in body design, I'm about ready to think the ultimate truck would be a Duramax drivetrain with a Ford body!!!!! (Just venting).
HEAVYdutyDMAX 12-08-2006, 04:19 PM Mine has had a couple issues also. Not very consistent like yours, only once or twice. A couple times i have started the truck and the entire guage cluster stayed off, nothing came on.
My speedo on my 04 did the exact same thing a couple of weeks back...After it finally corrected, I havn't had it happen again. Buy the way, FAF:eek: , I have owned 3 or 4 ford trucks, and SUV's. I have not been happy or even satisfied with any of them....Just my personal opinion. :D
tmhovis 12-08-2006, 04:49 PM I have also had this same exact problem and ended up needing to get my computer cluster replaced. I think it was about $200, no problems now.
Redneck5 12-08-2006, 08:45 PM I just picked mine up from the dealer today for the same problem. They replaced the cluster
beartrack 12-08-2006, 08:58 PM hi,i have a similar problem with my speedo,it take a long time to work after i put in gear and the speed is not correct, i think i will ha to replace the cluster.
WanaDmxsub 12-09-2006, 12:57 AM It is becoming a very common problem...see if you can get the dealer to warranty it.
If not (like me) here is where I sent mine. $109 plus shipping to him.
SPEEDOMETER-SALES-AND-SERVICE (http://stores.ebay.com/SPEEDOMETER-SALES-AND-SERVICE)
Unit453 12-09-2006, 01:04 AM Same problem here too. It will eventually correct itself after so many starts. Then you'll get the cluster creep...
Warranty covered mine.
This is very common on these trucks.
bspz28 12-09-2006, 08:41 AM I've been having the same problem on my truck. I notice it more when I have my trailer behind me. I would be doing 65-70 mph and notice the speedo is only reading 35 mph and then when I would stop and get back up to speed it would read 15 or so MPH. Only when I turn the truck off and start it back up it would ge back to normal but an hour later it can be back to reading low again ..
Yesterday for the second time I notice it was not reading right without the trailer behind me .
It's a known problem and even a company on ebay will fix it for 150.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/03-04-05-06-CHEVY-AVALANCHE-TAHOE-SPEEDOMETER-CLUSTER_W0QQitemZ270065912016QQihZ017QQcategoryZ33 675QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I had mine done under extended warranty 100.00 diagnostic 2 days part shipping and programing and rental car

That's the same guy I posted about. $150 is for the exchange $109 he will repair yours.
Skidoo xtreme 12-18-2006, 10:37 AM I am having the same problem, but what is causing this problem, bad capacitor, chip ect... I am hoping to find what componet is causing the problem and try to fix it myself.
Wilson 12-18-2006, 04:05 PM My brother has a 2003 with the same problem stopped reading 30mph. The other day it happened to my brother in laws 2004. With this many problems I would like to know the actual problem and make a permanent fix. Versus just throwing in a new cluster that could do it again.
wigeon123 12-19-2006, 02:02 PM Same issue here with a '04.5 just wondering if anyone has a fix besides replacing the whole cluster since it has been 10 days since the last post. By the way that shop from ebay is closed until Jan 2.
Skidoo xtreme 12-19-2006, 02:24 PM There is a shop in Denver, Colorado that will repair the speedometer for $225 with a 2 day turn around. But still I would like to know what is causing the problem. So far I have heard there is something on the board that is going bad and causing this, a friend thought it was a bad capacitor but he is not sure. I am about to the point of tearing mine out and troubleshooting it myself. But I would rather know what to look for or what part is bad to speed the process up. So doesn't anyone know what is causing this?
Thanks
wigeon123 12-20-2006, 09:59 AM Skidoo, any idea what the name of that shop is? As far as the cause is concerned my mechanic thinks it it a fault in the circuit that comes and goes. Talking to the dealer they can't shed any light, they just replace the cluster.
Doo800XP 12-20-2006, 10:30 AM I believe it's the stepper motor for the needle. My speedo went, and now my oil pressure is intermittent too. Would be nice if someone did a how to on that one! I've done some looking into it but can't get a part number or anything, it can't be THAT hard to replace if that ebay guy turns it around in a day.
dieselfevr 12-20-2006, 10:04 PM Had the same problem on 04.5. Speedometer said I was going 72 but the cop that pulled me over said I was going 93!
GUNNY05MAX 12-21-2006, 03:13 PM Figure it is cheaper to get a GPS and more reliable. Has your odometer been affected as well?

That is a big negative here.

When I have a chance, I am going to talk to my neighbor who has been using this guy in Denver. He was snowed in Ft Collins Colorado with the big snow storm that came thru. One thing someone or myself could do is before they send their cluster off to be repaired is to mark all the compents on the board and any thing else on the cluster. When it comes back you should be able to identify what was replaced and post it on this forum to help out fellow Chevy guys.
jasonlbz 12-22-2006, 09:45 AM Mine to but not to the extent of the rest of you (yet). Speedo is slow to get started most of the time, doesnt seem to get started till about 10-15 mph. After that though it seems to be fine. Does this affect anyones cuise control?
Skidoo xtreme 12-22-2006, 10:08 AM Not sure if it does affect the cruise control. What I do is when the speedo is working I take readings on my tach for 55, 65 and 75 MPH. On my truck with 265 85R16 tires my tach 65 is 2000 rpm, 55 is 1700rpm and 75 is 2300rpm appr.
Alan Drake 12-22-2006, 05:09 PM Just had the same problem, when off spedo sets at 10MPH. After a few starts it back to normal (or reasonable #). Noticed each time one starts the needle is pushed below 0MPH and then resets itself back to 0MPH.
Does anyone know how the CPU works?? Is it resetting a new zero on each start? Any spot on site that describes how to remove cluster?
rbegga 12-23-2006, 11:29 PM Here is a strange one in the same vein as the issues you all have been having:
i just bought an '07 classic 3500 Reg Cab Single Wheel truck. I noticed today that if, while in park, I rev the engine up to between 1500 and 2000 RPMs I can get my speedo needle to jump around randomly between 5 and 10 mph. Very weird! I think GM is using some cheap electronics and when I rev the engine current is leaking from another circuit and driving the speedo up. Think I should take it to the dealer? Not sure if they will see it as a problem, but I'm sure its just a matter of time before I start having issues like you all have had with incorrect speeds registering.
Thoughts?

wmiller715 01-11-2007, 09:21 AM The cluster on my truck started acting stupid just out of warranty,it took me a while to find out the cause, I called chev customer service and ask them to pay for it.I was instructed to have the work done at the dealership, pay for it and call them back.$329.00 later.I called them back gave them all the info they requested, and was instructed that they would review my claim.I rec, a call a few days later advising me that they would not pay my claim.Boy was I surprised. Not!!!! Saw that hosing coming a mile off.Make long story short since 98 I have bought 6 chev.trucks, this is my last. They told me that they knew that alot of clusters were faulty and that they were working on a cure.Go ahead GM keep installing faulty parts in your veh.and you will need more than red tag sales, employee discounts,etc... to get people to buy your junk:mad:
AndyB 01-14-2007, 12:37 PM WMILLER715,
I agree that the body, interior, and electonics of these trucks do not hold up to the quality of some of the other brands, but I still really like the engine, alli trans combo. I just wish that GM would do some quality controls on everything sitting on the drive train!!
Are the newer body styles better built???

I hope you're still reading this thread, because if you would have looked around at all the other "bad cluster" threads first in this area, you would have read that a man on Ebay does cluster repairs for $120. Does excellent work, too. You would've saved yourself the hosing. We all know GM won't cover things if they don't have to, unless you are VERY persuasive. But who wants to go through that stress? Better to find a cheaper way than trusting a dealer to do you right.
BTW, Welcome to the Place.
wmiller715 01-15-2007, 09:35 AM I knew about the guy on Ebay, just thought GM would do the right thing.I had read another post from someone on another board that had the same problem,he called GMs customer care and they gave him back his money.I even told the GM customer care CHEERLEADER about it.She told me the problem is not very common.I told her to spend a little time and do a little research, and they will find out as I did just how large the problem is.
Just being curious I would like to know how many clusters since 2001 has the guy on Ebay has done.I know several GM mechanics that told me they do an avg. of 2 a week.
TheBac 01-15-2007, 10:31 AM Its mostly 2003 clusters that we are seeing here. There have been some 2004s. Nobody's reported a 2001-2002 cluster in any thread I've read so far.
GM just used a bad batch of stepper motors in 2003, or they used a poor Class-2 compatible stepper motor. They should be a recall item.
1000dollabill 01-15-2007, 11:25 AM Well I have a 2001 and every once in a while my speedo gets "notchy." It sometimes only reads in increments of 5 mph, but is actually fairly accurate.
