: Gas mileage seems to getting worse

I purchased my first diesel (I am hooked) in August, a 06 reg cab LLY with the Allison 6 speed auto. I am running the Bully Dog Power Pup and installed the Air Raid cool air intake. The mileage was ok around 18/19MPG in performance mode. I do not tow anything, I just run up and down the NJ Turnpike. The peformance mode seems to get better mileage then the tow/econo mode at the time. The temps are getting colder in NJ and I started using the ULSD since that is all that is around for the most part. My mileage looks to be getting worse. Is this because of the ULSD??? I am getting pretty pissed because I am investing all kinds of money in this truck and the mileage is getting worse. I have about 12k on the engine so far... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get some better mileage without spending alot of coin???? If it is the ULSD, is there any way around this, like using fuel addatives or something??? Any help is greatly appreciated. :D

By the way I am pretty new to this whole diesel thing so I am pretty stupid at this point but learning!!!!:o:

Thanks

From what I understand from reading different posts on this forum the ULSD will cause lower mileage and can possibly cause premature engine wear. I amy be wrong and if I am I take no offense to someone correcting me, but I think that is what somebody put on here about the difference between ULSD and LSD.

Welcome to The Diesel Place. When i got my LBZ in May for the first couple of tanks i was getting 15 mpg. After about 500 miles i put on the Power Pup in Tow/Economy and it went up to about 17-18 mpg. In August i went up to performance and with the stock intake/exhaust i was getting about 22 mpg. When it started getting cold i went down to about 20 mpg. After a block heater CEL i set the truck back to stock to get the reflash done and haven't touched it since. Now with my new exhaust and the truck back to stock programming i am getting about 19 mpg and dropping. It was about -25 C all last week, i probably won't see 20+ mpg until summer again.

ULSD sucks....Period, bottom line. Winter grade fuel sucks too. Its a double negative this time of year.

If it makes you feel any better, after owning my truck for 2 weeks, my first tank was 13.5 mpg.

What are we suppossed to do about the USLD grade.. Is there any alternative???? Also, what is the winter grade??? I live in NJ so basically most pumps have ULSD....

I always seem to loose 1-2mpg in the winter. Prob more idle time and winter blend fuel... Jumps right back up in the spring.

I've got over 22k on my LBZ,still get upwards of 19-20 MPG highway.I didnt notice any difference with ULSD since I mix it with WVO.

Jimbo:

Winter grade is a mix of diesel and kerosene. I think its 75% diesel and 25% kerosene. It lowers the gel point in cold climates. Diesel turns to gel at a certain temp. If I'm not mistaken its around -10. Mixing it wil kerosene lowers that temp quite a bit but it does not make it fail safe. Kerosene produces lower BTU's than diesel. Basically what that means is it dosent run as hot and produces less power than diesel. There isnt much helping this. Some people run additives like stanadyne or power services diesel treatment during the winter months. I know it gets cold down there in Jersey but you really dont need to worry about gelling anything as if wont get that cold there.

WVO means waste vegetable oil.. as far as additives they might help, if i'm corect jersey has one of the lowest cetane ratings in the US, which is 40. using an additive such as the stanadyne or redline will help raise the cetane rating ( 2 to 7 points)the higher the number the more BTUs which means more power and efficiency. atleast thats how I understand it. as well the additives will help lubricate vital fuel system parts.

My mileage drops at least this much during the winter but is always back up to 18-20 in the summer. I think it is a combination of more idle time (warm up), winter fuel, and thicker fluids in the truck until everything is warm.
