: Cummins owner needs help: How do I add a high idle switch to 2007 Duramax

I'm a Cummins owner, so the Chevy thing is kind of foreign to me. I know there is an easy way to connect to two pins and activate the factory high idle on a Cummins. Is there any similar (easy) way to put high idle on a Duramax? Here is why:

-I work for a company that sells and services equipment for fire departments.
-Recently a customer gave us a 2007 (but prior to particulate filters) one ton Chevy diesel crew cab 4x4 automatic cab and chassis.
-We are preparing this truck to be used as a small fire truck.
-We do these trucks often, but this is our first Chevy (most are fords, 450s and 550s).
-Now that we have added all of the electrical items (warning lights, scene lights, radios, siren, winch, the starter motor for the pump, etc.) we find that we need a high idle switch to keep the truck happy should all of the items be run at the same time.

-Is there an easy way to add a high idle switch to this truck?

Thanks for the help!

Im pretty sure that high idle is now standard and automatic on the duramax when the air intake senses the temps to be below 32f/ 0 c...

i dont know off hand, but do a search (top right on menu bar) or look in the (DYI) do it yourself section, it definately can be done.

IIRC, if the truck has steering wheel controls, you can set the idle speed. Look in the owners manual, it should be there.

Hopefully someone with an 06 or 07 will chime in.

I think I know what he's asking...

He wants to be able to bump up the high idle whenever he wants to keep the charging system running and everything electrical running to par.

This is kinda like a fire truck idling up when the hydraulic system draws a load.

I would shoot DuraToTheMax a pm. I believe he's done this by using his cruise controls.

Last post I read on it was that no one has figured out how to do it yet on the lbz.:(

It's easy to do on the 04-05's to have high idle work off the cruise control when in park. I suspect 06 07 is also possible if you know which connection to make. It's really easy on 04's. add one wire to the ECM and hook it to the brake switch. Tapping the CC goes from normal idle to 1200 rpm another tap goes down to 800 rpm, then back to normal. tap the brake and it goes to normal idle.

Thanks for the input, but many of the post don't really apply here because:

-This is a stripped down truck, no cruise.
-It will be stored in a heated fire station, so the high idle temperature is not applicable.
-The reason to go to high idle is all electrical.
-Ideally we would just like a switch that goes to a high idle setting so the alternators make more juice.

Thanks

Theres a company near me that does wrecker bodies and I know they have to do high idle I will go ask them how they do it and see if they'll give me a diagram....I'll get back to you...

I've got the info from GM. I can e-mail it to anybody that needs it. PM me and I will get it to you. It's a little lengthy to post here.
