I bought a new 04 LLY SLT a few months ago. Is it normal for something to whine until the engine/tranny is nice and warm? I am a former gasser and I get it, it's a diesel. Buy older dmax's i've driven didn't make such a loud whining noise when driving cold? It seems to increase in pitch/frequency with the rpm's. Please someone tell me it's just some normal gizmo noise like turbo bearings (you're right, i have not idea what I'm talking about here!) breaking in or something goofy and not my alli? Seems to go away after about 10-20 miles or so of stop and go. Haven't owned it through a winter yet so I don't know if it will be really bad at extreme cold temps.
Probably nothing, but like most dmax owners, i wonder about the little noises sometimes! Anybody know about this? Is this typical break in stuff?

I suspect what you are hearing is the turbo. Mine too is noisier until the truck warms up. Just wait until winter when the temps really drop. It sounds like a jet engine! I love it!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Might be the transmission. I recall mine when new having the same sorta sound.

My LB7 does the same thing, think it's normal, no problems with it so far. I believe I saw a post somewhere else that it's the turbo making the whine when it's cold. Edited by: srode

Most likely candidate is the Fan/Clutch. If you do a search for fan clutch, you will either go blind from reading so much, or figure out that what you are hearing is normal and not to worry about. Mine doesn't engage the fan clutch for as long as yours, but does the same thing. Pretty loud, wait until you get your engine hot and that fan is on at speed. The first time that happens you think something is WAY wrong with your truck. . . .

Thanks for all good info. I've got another 10K on it now since my first post. Although it has been warmer out in terms of seasonal temps, the noise isn't as pronounced as when I drove it off the lot in the spring time. Bottom line is, it's a great, tough truck and I routinely beat the tar out of it on the road. It seems lap it up and beg to be driven even harder!!! In fact, it's definetly getting more power and better mileage as it gets broken in!!!
Cheers!

Mine likes to squeal on startup when its damp/raining or anything mositure related outside, mine also squeals when i shut it down.... Im suspecting a bad drive belt bearing, but the dealer just gave me the runaround saying its normal for them to squealhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Polarbear, mine squeals on startup and shutdown as well, figure it's the drag on the Alternator on startup, your guess as good as mine on shutdown. Mine whines on startup when cold as well, I think it's the low/high pressure diesel pump. I have no evidence to back it up just an assumption. Anyone else???
