: Suncoast Level 3 Install...............
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-25-2004, 09:21 PM Some miscellaneous pictures..........
It was quite a task..........Mackin and my other bud John were there for the weekend to help http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif, and be a second and third set of eyes to make sure it all went back together correctly.
An Allison Service manual is helpful and answered some questions we had.
I also had the Transgo Book by STEVE YOUNGER available from MIKE L. here and the Transgo install instructions and of coarse SUNCOAST's installation instructions.
I would caution anyone doing this yourself, a jig on an engine stand makes life a lot easier. Also have a large bench or table to put things on and plenty of lint free rags and brake clean with a compressor to blow things dry.
Some basic tools are required like a 7mm,8mm,13mm & 15mm sockets, a large set of snap ring pliers as well a TQ wrench capable of 7 lbs and need only as high as 45 lbs. A 4x4 hub spanner wrench is nice to have for the rear cover removal as well as a couple large screwdrivers, a pick or hook.
Here are some pics........wish I took more but we were involved in re-assembling it and I got lazy in taking the pictures.
C3 snap ring.......need a large screw driver to remove it.
Notice engine stand JIG on left of photo..........

GMC-2002-Dmax 07-25-2004, 09:32 PM How long did it take you do it from start to finish?

GMC2500HD 07-25-2004, 09:34 PM Oh man, so much for that trans holding.... Installed a crushed beer can instead of that spacer. You been trying to figure out why you have extra parts huh? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-25-2004, 09:45 PM I will get some nicer pics up tomorrow on the BURNT and Ruined original C2 and C3 clutches and I'll be letting everyone know how she goes..........or doesn't go....... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif.........
If she won't go..........well .......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif............I got a match.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
Seriously,
It was not that bad a job, definitely a 2 or 3 person job none the less.
And I can't stress enough the amount of time that we needed to set aside for all 3 of us to be constantly checking and re-checking
......Mike L. was just a phone call away and helped me out a few times during this install. THANKS MIKE.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
I will say a BIG , BIG THANKS http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif ......To smoop at SUNCOAST.......http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif
All of my clutch pack clearances fell within the recommended and required windows......C1-C4 are specially machined by Suncoast for extra capacity .........all within 2 thousandths of spec.

chevmeister 07-25-2004, 10:06 PM Whats with the huggies box? Do they soak up the tranny fluid better than shop towells?
From last september i dont remember a 12 pack lasting mac all that long, specially when an allison and suncoast are involved.... how long does that translate too?
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-25-2004, 10:18 PM The Huggies Box.............is a story all it's own, best left untold..........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
Seriously though it was just something I could throw away when I was done catching tranny fluid dripping out ....... better than the garage floor, plus Mackin said I have won't have to call the EPA or the Fire Department for a hazardous spill cleanup......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

GMC2500HD 07-25-2004, 10:23 PM The huggies box if from left over diapers that were used by the passengers when they rode with him... In case they sh*t themselves.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Tony,
Thanks for the pics. Just taking the sucker out and manhandling it back in is a job I'll bet.
I see you got your white sneakers dirty.
Don't let MAC connect the lines
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-25-2004, 11:06 PM I HAD IT TAKEN OUT AND.............
I AM HAVING IT PUT BACK IN........
I am not that brave............http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Takes 2 people to lift it..........By buddy John lifted the converter up and set it in like it was nothing http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif..........
He probably could have lifted the whole tranny by himself.........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
He was in charge of the Torque Wrench http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif too.........
I will see tomorrow If I did it right..........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif
Even though I second guessed myself at every step and checked and re-checked..........spending 1/2 hour on the P1 Sun Gear flat thrust bearing install orientation alone. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
It said in Mac's manual that if it was not installed properly it could
cause "A Possible Catastrophic Failure".......http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif..hopefully we put it together real good.........

I built this table to work on the C1/C2 rotating assembly......lined it with shop towels and the hole is for the input shaft to drop through making a nice stable working area.

Tranny on the custom Bracket............Kent Moore makes a bracket.this took 30 minutes to cut and weld together with 8 holes drilled.

ratlover 07-26-2004, 02:09 PM What did your c5's spec to in clearance? Just curious.
Mackin 07-26-2004, 03:01 PM They weren't checked. I would imagine that they would have been in factory spec considering that the lettering was still visable on the clutch .

GMC-2002-Dmax 07-26-2004, 03:23 PM What did your c5's spec to in clearance? Just curious.
It was quite a gap............was larger than I expected.........the same as you probably had seen if I was to guess........all stock though.
Filled her up with fluid..took 25 qts. total transmission dry and transfer case as well.
I will say the TC locking up feels like an extra gear in 5th......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
