: Nitto Grappler all terrain tires
DMAX POWER007 07-24-2004, 11:35 PM Has anyone run the Nitto Grappler all terrain tires? I'm thinking about running them. Just wanted some feedback first. Great looking tires. 500 treadwear rating, A traction, B temp. and best of all, they have an E load rating. Sounds great to me, especially for our heavy trucks along with hauling. Any info would be nice.

No really, I do like them but I am WAYYY too hard on them to give you a good answer.
I've had the 305's and there just too big for GP. I now have the 285's and I do like them.
What kinda stuff will your truck see? Does it even go off-road?

gardnerteam 07-25-2004, 10:25 AM I ran a set of Nitto 305E's on my 02 on Weld outback 8". Loved them the first 2,000 miles. Then they started to wear, both front a rear, although rear wore faster. They had less than 25% treat left at 10,000 miles when sold them. As the tread wore, they got very noisy and would hydroplane on a wet street. I really wanted the load range E, but 305's, even in a tire that wore well, just turned out to be too wide for my use, which includes a lot of off highway. I went back (eventually) to 285's and will stay there. Just wish I could find a decent 285E.

Burner, How many miles do you have on your 285's? I think that is the way I will go. I want at least 40-50,000 miles out of my tires. I get that with the BFG A/T KO's. They are just $200 a pop and D load. Are you good about rotating?
Gardnerteam, Have you tried the 285's yet? Do do burnouts and things like that or do you just everyday drive like I do? If you drive like I do (lots of miles weekly) what tires have you found to be best as far as mileage, load, noise,etc.

The AT's sling mud very well, ride really nice, have great load strength, seem to be narly tough and fairly quiet. Oh, one more thing to add, they ballance like as well as high dollar Mic's. However, I don't see anyone getting more than 25k "useful" mileage out of them. Someone should make them change the 500 treadwear rating to say... 250 or maybe 300. My 03 has 42k miles and has had 5 sets of tires, I still have the mudders. I will admit, I knew the new TG's would not go 50k but there just soo damm cool.
My next tire may be a Toyo, BFG, Cooper or a REVO. I'll probably go with the REVO but hey... you never know.
To be honest the tread really doesn't make a huge difference until you go really off-road. The hwy tred will go just about as far as the AT tread most of the time. If I were anywhere around the 95% on-road I would just get hwy tires and be done with it. The Diesels are HEAVY and you would rather get one stuck really simple than "a little bit further" than the other folks could go. The main thing you'll need is 4-wheel drive, good tires or not.

I leave here in Dec or jan of each year and drive up to 25,000 miles in 3 months in Mexico, Guatemala & some Honduras. Rough roads, lots of 4 wheel drive 100 mi each way in mud, roacks and sand. Locally, I drive quite a few miles, some towing, mostly running around the back country of Central & Eastern Oregon. Best tire - Toyo 285D from Les Schwab because of heavy casing, good wear, and never had a problem with flats, breaks, or cuts.

I am running BFG AT KO 285's. They have 45,000 miles with about 10,000 left and I have only rotated and balanced once also. Bad at it too. Great tire, just exploring my options.

Did you run the Terra Grappler or the Mud Grappler? I'm thinking of the Terra Grappler for the highway.

I love exploring in the jungle and visiting very out of the way places. Very interesting seeing civilizations that are 700 to 2000 years old. Do non profit touring with anyone who wants to fly in a tour a certain area. Everybody has to have a hobby - I started with hunting, graduated to racing cars of all types, then to collecting Porsches and collector Chev's, then just started hiding out in the jungle. Hang out of a helocopter now and then shooting photographs. Can't decide what I want to be when I grow up. if I grow up!
luvthesmellofdiesel 07-26-2004, 02:02 PM I have the 265 E terra grapplers AT. I only have about 6K miles on them. They seem to be wearing ok. If they don't last for 40K miles, I'll go w/ BFG KO's next time around. I went to the tire store this time for BFG KO's and ended up w/ Nitto's for about $100+ less plus they are E rated since BFG only makes D's except for the 245's... I like em (so far). All my mileage is highway and city, next to no off-road.

Chevyfreek 07-26-2004, 03:12 PM I am running 265 Nitto's in the "E" load range and I have almost 13,000 miles on them and honestly they are wearing kinf of quick IMO. They will probably not last much over 30,000 miles if I were to guess at this point. The tires are tough looking and I bought them because they were decently priced for and "E" load range. I will probably try something different next though. I do like how these tires ride though. They handle a load very well when you air them up. I agree that they should probably change the rating for tread life, becuase I think 500 is a bit to high. I rotate them ever 6,000 miles just fyi..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Are you saying you take photographs of old villages? That sounds like lots of fun. Are you permited to searche in old dump sites and the like?

Gardnerteam, The Mayan ruins are some of the most incredible sights you will ever see. The technology they had way back then is incredible.

Getting 50K on any tire that's attached to a 3 ton truck is not realistic, let alone an AT. With the more aggressive pattern you just can't expect that to happen.
I've had the TG's on for about 30K now, and I'm guessing they're good for another 10K or so. I made sure the front end was aligned when I got them, and I rotate every 10K. They are wearing as good as I thought they would.
The TG's are the best AT tire I've ever owned, bar none. They ride and handle wonderfully, and they work greta in all but the deepest mud (which you'd really need an MT for anyway). I'll certainly be getting another pair when these wear out.
gardnerteam 07-27-2004, 09:17 AM The one thing I do like about the Toyo's is the sidewalls are pretty strong, but I would still like to have a 285E. I would also consider a 255E (same heigth) in a great tire. Can't collect Mayan artifacts in Mexico as very illegal, but I have been given some pottery pieces by workers in digs in Mexican ruins that are 1,000 years +/- old. I do have a couple of complete pots about 1,000 years old +/- from Guatemala, where they were legal to possess. I did not take them from ruins, but purchased them from locals whose families has looted them over 50 years ago. I am very lucky to have been allowed by a renouned archeologist into a newly discovered ruin a couple of years back where I was only the second white man to go there (he was first). I saw artifacts that had been in the same position on the ground for about 1100 years and photographed only - never touch. Unbelievable experience. Mayan culture is not 10,000 years old, but started about 900 BC and in one form or another lasted as various civilizations until 1300 or 1400 AD. I can't tell you why their clocks and much of their engineering still work, but modern day stuff doesn't because of mass production, bean counters, and built in obsolescence. Imagine a D/A designed and built to Mayan standards? Are you listening GM?
Stove 07-27-2004, 07:18 PM I currently have TG on my ride. First set of tires were Mickey MTX's. Got about 40K out of them. I have about 10k on the TG now. I pull hard farm duty, tow a car hauler loaded with produce, and well just about you name it. The mickeys didn't roll near as smooth as the TG's. The TG's take 1 OZ or less to balance. They provide awesome traction in about all cases, not quite as good on the mud as the mickey's, but the are AT's. They don't clean as well as the mickey's, but I was in mud 8-10 inches plus standing water, so that in my book is just fine for a AT. Snow traction is awesome. Overall a excellent tire for the money. I think that you dmax guys are harder on tires because of the low end grunt, I certainly don't have that problem!!!!! later

FYI, firts set of tires, Yokahama Geolander AT's 265's 44,000 miles. Second set, BFG AT KO's 285's 52,000 miles and counting. About 7-10,000 miles of life left.(or so says my tire dealer,wpouldn't think he'd lie about it) If all else fells I will run BFG's again. Just wanted to see if something better is out there. Oh yeah, I have a 3 TON TRUCK.
Any one ran the Revo's for the life of the tire yet? How many miles?
