: High idle switch
dieselboostfreak 07-24-2004, 05:28 PM Hey guys,
I just finished up installed my idle switch and I have a few questions. I bought the kit the dieseltech sold and so I installed everything accordingly and it will not work. I took the cover off the harness(grey in color) and poked it thru the #71 hole. Pushed it all the way in till it wouldnt go in any further. So, I put everything back together and wire my switch up using a 10amp fuse and mini add a circuit out of the fuse box(ignition fuse) and the light comes on in the switch indicating its getting power. So, that eliminates a bad ground. The only quirky thing out of the install was that I had to use 18 gauge wire to the switch and the green wire given was 14 gauge. So it goes from 14 gauge to 18 gauge. I turned the switch on and push the cruise button one over and it did nothing, I hit the set button and it did nothing. Pushed it all the way to resume and it did nothing. So, what gives? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Edited by: dieselboostfreak
GMCSLEHD 07-24-2004, 07:32 PM On mine you have to hit the cruise twice to get her to idle up. An easier way (IMO) to wire it is to use a 3m ScotchLoc (wire tap) and tap the High Idle wire directly into the green/white wire (IIRC) above the brake. That way you'll have high idle until you apply the brake to shift out of park.

BIGMoe 07-24-2004, 07:44 PM For some reason when I installed mine, I had to take it to my local dealer and have it set up with the Tech II. I do know that dmaxalliTech had problems with one he did, and had to use the Tech II to set the rpm's on it also. He said it was the only one he had to do that way. Not sure if this is your problem on not, but hope you get it working soon!!!! Note:You must have the LB7 engine, because the LLY is supposed to have the high idle standard from the factory.
dieselboostfreak 07-24-2004, 11:20 PM Hey guys,
I am trying to get this figured out. The pin that fits into the blue connector will not go all the way in. I dont know if its supposed to but I have pushed that thing to till it WILL NOT go down any further. Does anybody have any idea if this is right? I cant get it level with the other pins?
BIGMoe 07-24-2004, 11:39 PM dieselboostfreak,
Did you by chance do a search for High idle install? You can Click Here (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1006&KW=high+idle). Also Kennedy Diesel has some good directions on his Tech Tips on his website. Click Here (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/dmaxtechtips.html). I hope some of these will help you. I remember when we put the one on my 2003 There was a trick to getting that pin all the way in the connecter.
Hope this will help you.
dieselboostfreak 07-25-2004, 12:22 AM Hey guys,
I got it. Once I got the connector all the way in there it worked. God, the high idle really helps out. Thanks again for all your help! Gotta love this site! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Wickedsprint 07-25-2004, 12:40 AM It is ALOT easier if you dissasemble the main block for all the wires instead of forcing it in.
Custom Home Builder 07-26-2004, 03:38 AM I might be stupid but i cannot for the life of me figure out how hooking the high idle wire to the brake pedel works. the way i understand it is as soon as you start your truck or put it in park/neutrual the rpm's go up or do you still use the cruise control to turn it on and bring the rpm's up to where you want them to stay. Is the brake only to turn the high idel on and off, then you still set it with the cruise control stick?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Kartattack 07-26-2004, 07:48 AM Using that method, high idle is available anytime the truck is running. You still have to activate it through the cruise control. It is turned off when you step on the brake (as when you shift from Park to any other gear).
Aggie91 07-27-2004, 09:12 AM I finished my install last nite (YM 2003 Crew cab). About the only problem I had was that the little blue quick connect I used for the green/white brake wire splice would not make a connection w/the green/white. I had to strip isulation from the two wires to make a connection & threw the crimp connector in the trash. (after my 3rd time upside down on the floorboards of the truck!). . . . The connector had just a wee bit of velocity working when it hit the trash can http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Operation is a breeze.
1) Turn the cruise control ON . . . . (Note to self: Must remember that Preston!)
2) Push set 2x - idle increases to 1200 rpm.
3) Push set again - idle resumes normal speed.
or
4) Push resume - idle increases to 1700 rpm
5 Push resume again - idle resumes normal speed.
At any time you can kill the advanced idle by stepping on the brake pedal.
A really good Mod & simple to do. It just takes a little time to get it done & check to make sure everything is right before re-hooking up the battery.

ob_1jr 10-09-2004, 05:04 AM I just got mine installed tonight. It took about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It was pretty easy and I am glad I didn't pay anyone to do it. The hardest part for me was to get it though the grommet. Then, I remembered that the programmer wire for the display went through there and just taped the wire to that one and pulled it right through. As everyone said here, the directions are right on. I'm glad I joined the forum.

duramaxdiesel 10-09-2004, 11:54 PM Is there a way to activate the high idle on an '04 without cruise control? Nick
moss022 10-11-2004, 08:29 PM i thought that all the 03 models and up already had the high idle install from the factory???? you can access it from the options you can select it from on the dash?? the only thing is it wont turn on unless the motor is cold and the temp is below 32 i believe.

The high idle you describe is only on the LLY's. 2004.5+
moss022 10-12-2004, 09:52 PM i am pretty sure that i showed one of my freinds how to turn his on. his is an 03. we just couldnt turn it on becuase it was to warm at that time. i am about 90% sure that when they changed the dash from 02 to 03 and up is when you can turn the hight idle on and off.
Bowtie Boy 10-12-2004, 09:57 PM Hooked up my high idle over the weekend, what a breeze with brake pedal/off switch. Work really sweet to keep the truck cool here in sunny FL.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
BukWild 10-13-2004, 10:41 AM MOss, it wasn't on my 03, I added the factory switch from the bigger trucks, plugged it in, and tapped in to the wire under the hood and it works great.
Chalie M 10-13-2004, 11:19 PM I had the same problem with the installation of the wire terminal on my 04 lly, it was necessary for me to grind down the terminal and get a little agressive with the hole which then allowed the terminal to be pushed all the way through and be even with the other terminals. It takes pushing the cruise button in 2x's before it activates, and has been working like a charm since..
Max Power 10-13-2004, 11:22 PM Charlie M you installed the pto option on your LLY? Did you use the terminal for an LB7 or did you get the proper one for the LLY?
Are you sure you have an LLY? The ECM is quite a bit different and I have had no luck finding pins for it.
Chalie M 10-13-2004, 11:30 PM Sorry, I meant to say LB7 engine
