: Premium Diesel and Additives
Roegs 07-24-2004, 10:37 AM The local farm supply sells a high volume of diesel that happens to be a premium blend that they claim needs no additives (http://www.premiumdiesel.com/KPFGoldDiesel.htm). They only sell the one type of diesel, and its at a price thats lower than normal diesel at other local stations. I've been using Primrose and am wondering if I still need to use it when running this blend. Also, is there any harm adding Primrose on top of the additives they already add to the fuel? Roegs 07-24-2004, 11:35 PM C'mon...somebody must have an opinion on using additives with premium blends. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Kartattack 07-25-2004, 12:11 AM Well, the lubricity looks good to me, so I think the only thing it needs is a small cetane boost since they claim 42-46 which to me is not quite high enough if the fuel is at the lower end of that spread.
JEBar 07-25-2004, 09:14 AM we just returned from a 10,000+ mile trip cross country while towing a very heavy 33' camper and hit many stations that posted a minimum 40 cetane rating (at least that is what I assumed the 40 stood for), only saw a couple of pumps with a 42 rating .... I do add FPPF Total Power at every fill and with 71,000+ on the truck, have never burned a tank of fuel that I could tell impacted the way the truck runs (positively or negatively) ... do carry a bottle of FPPF cetane booster in the truck but have never been able to tell any difference when using it or not

rtquig 07-25-2004, 09:29 AM I have used both Primrose and Stanadyne since about 5k, and now have 33k. I have run a few tanks of diesel before switching from one additive to the other. The only difference I notice is the amount of smoke and color. The Primrose seem to put out a darker exhaust than the Stanadyne. I change the filter regular 12-15k, and am about to put on the nicktane that I bought over the past winter. I don't see a difference using additives, but like life insurance I am investing in it and will continue to use it.
Probably not needed. I would run some Primrose every 3rd tank or so. Right now all I am running is Soy Shield for added lubricity. I had been running FPPF, but the station I fuel at now has filters on the pumps and they move a lot of fuel, so I am not worried. My OEM filter was clean as a whistle, Cat must be doing it's job very well. Will change the Cat out when it gets 20K on it, which is very soon.
Kartattack 07-25-2004, 11:16 AM JEBar:
FPPF Total Power raises cetane as well, though I am not sure by how much. So those 40 cetane fuel loads you get are being raised with the addition of FPPF TP.
dieselboostfreak 07-25-2004, 12:55 PM I am going to start running Stanadyne every fill up. Should help some. I figure a little is better than nothing. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Roegs 07-25-2004, 06:50 PM Thanks for all the replies on this. From an additive perspective, if a little is good, can I assume more is better. I'm assuming that the premium diesel (which claims I need no additives) already has some of the qualities that Primrose provides me. For example, the premium has additional lubricity. If I continue to use Primorse with the premium diesel, is there a point where the fuel would have too much lubricity?
SAYWHAT 07-25-2004, 07:57 PM I used FPPF every tank for a year.Could not see a increase in power or mileage. The reason I quit using it was the truck started running poorly for several tanks of fuel.Seemed to runbetter without it.Then I decided to give the Primrose a try and ran that for three months with no increase in power or mileage.Started using Cenex Premium diesel fuel which has a demulsifier in it and quit using the Primrose which has a emulsifier in it.
Max Owner 07-25-2004, 11:47 PM Up here Sunoco has Gold Diesel. I think its claim to fame as a premium fuel is a higher cetane rating. Don't remember if it has any better lubricity to it.
IF this is the case, additive for lubricity would probally be recommended.
Black Max 07-26-2004, 09:01 AM A product called PowerService supplement and cetane boost is sold where I've been fueling. See guys with big trucks dumping it in when they're fueling; talked to one and he says he uses a qt to 100 gals every time he fuels. Says his motor runs better. Anybody hear of this or use it? Thanks.
Max Owner 07-26-2004, 10:37 AM Black Max;I used to use it. There is a website under Bennetts. I used to have it bookmarked. I ran it for a while. Switched back to Standyne Performance Formula.
I have a bunch of fuel milage numbers to convert. Will compare fuel milages between the two.
I used Power Service Diesel Kleen. Cheaper than Stanadyne, and more volume. Don't really know if it did any good.
Black Max 08-04-2004, 10:14 AM I'm thinking that alot of this stuff is "feel good", but it certainly can't hurt. I've decided that mine runs a little better with the PowerService, and my actual mileage empty is usually around 20 mpg....without my foot "in it" all the time. Am curious how much it'll drop when I start towing the 5th wheel.

I started using PowerService around 10K miles, now have just over 14K. It is the only thing I found at Walley World I could get easy access too. My last fillup I finally broke the 20MPG mark. Did PowerService do it, or have I just got bored chewing up 'ricers' and been staying out of the throttle more? Probably a little of both. I have noticed the diesel clatter seems a little quieter since using it every tank. I also have noticed that diesel or premium diesel hasn't seemed to make that much difference in MPG either way. I just put the P/S in all tanks.
Black Max 08-05-2004, 07:19 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gifMike_in_Wisc, Did you find the "party" yet? Will be heading your way sometime in August dragging a trailer with the rider on it. The grass isn't getting cut enough, and we have to have a path to the cabin for hunting this fall!
Mike_in_Wisc 08-06-2004, 08:17 AM Just my luck, a day late a dollar short, the mower is outa gas, and the 'pardee' is over. Man, that's scarey, I'm even starting to spell it the way they dohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
