: How can you tell if you have stock computer tuning

The only problem I have with my truck is that it almost runs TOO well. I guess it really is supposed to be that much faster than anything I'm used to, but I would like to be able to make sure, if possible.

Obviously, there were no visible performance additions on it when I bought it, but don't some programmers just change the stock programming, so the programming is different, but there is nothing physical on the truck? Where is the actual PCM chip that you either replace or reprogram? Is there any way to tell for sure if a truck has stock tuning?Edited by: Brake_Torq

Run it down the quarter mile. If your running higher than 16.5, you are stock. I don't know if there is any other way to tell.

What about a 0-60 time? Thats probably not as sure as a quarter mile, but I can do that a lot easier. I haven't actually timed it yet, but I have counted in my head, and I got about 7 to 8 seconds. Of course, thats probably way off. I need to put the stopwatch to it and see what I get.

What would be about normal, assuming stock LB7, 2wd, exended cab?

!.Find a dyno and run it. Either a DynoDynamics,Mustang or Superflow/Dynojet will suffice. All members here are pretty sure what your baseline should be.... better still would be going to a dyno event and run it at the same time as another DMX is there so you can compare, then have him make a stock run and see where you are at.

Well, I put the stopwatch to it. I ran it between 2 signs that I know are about a quarter mile apart. I got 16.4, 16.7, and 16.1. And, on the last one I didn't start the time until I was moving, where on the first 2 I started and then hit it, to simulate some reation time. And that was from a little of a brake stand start (not enough to spin)

0-60 time was about 8.5 seconds

So, I guess that means I'm stock, right?

Sounds stock to me. Before I installed an intake, exhaust, and 6-gun my truck ran 16.2 in the 1/4 mile and 8.2 0-60mph.

You'll get used to it and start to think its a dog, then you'll add a small box to it and think it really rips......then you will start to get used to it and think its a dog....then you will turn up the chip to the next level and think it rips.....its a vicious cycle. There was a time I thought my juice set at 30hp was sweet, now I'm bored to tears with my juice set to 125hp....well not bored to tears but definatly ready to turn up the wick some morehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

Bored to tears with +125HP? I think it will definitely take me a while to get that far. It still feels smokin fast to me, and mine's just a stock truck. That's why I have been asking about it. I thought it was so fast that somebody already turned it up a little! I might squeeze a little bit more, but getting huge power isn't really why I have it, anyway.

(famous last words...) We'll see how it goes.

I'm with ratlover. I started with 90hp got bored really quick, then went to 125, same thing, bored in no time. Then on to 145. Well you get the idea. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Although I really wasn't impressed with stock to begin with so perhaps you will be ok.

I think if there was no such thing as a power box, I would be happy with stock. Edited by: Max Power

That's with anything. After awhile, you'll get used to it and move on. On the same token, you could buy a Lamborghini Diablo or Dodge Viper Hennesey 650 and become bored with the power on those vehicles also......

Yeah but I dont think I'd tire of picking up the chicks with one of thosehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

To each his own.....so people want different things. Some people are happy stock and some are happy juiced and some are throwing spray and propane and windshield washer fluid on a hot program. If everybody did the same thing how fun would that be?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Although I'm betting if you through a box on your truck and drove it for a week you wouldnt go backhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif Didnt mac say dmax is a drug and I'm hooked? I'm a happy addicthttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

I sorta have the same problem... I just bought an '03 Sierra 2500hd DMAX, and was looking for the coolant heater plug(Which I never could locate...?????looked in manual, didnt see it in the vacinity it stated) I did find a box hooked into part of the wiring harness (by two mesh encased wiring clusters). It said Edge products (which I am assuming is one of the tuning controllers) Howver there is nothing else to adjust it with or otherwise know it is there. there is also 2 other wires that are free adn not coverd... Should there be something else to this? is this indeed a programmer, and if so how would I adjust it?

http://www.edgeproductsinc.com/ Its a good moduelhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif See if they will send you a copy of the directions, thier customer service is great and they are great people to deal with, I'm sure they will hook you up.

or you can view em here http://www.edgeproductsinc.com/instructions.html

The block heater is tied up with the loom running on the pass side of the motor, it will be tie wraped up and you will need to clip em and it helps to blast off the electrical tape and peel back the wire loom dude and yank some extra cord out of it after you peel the inner tape and stuff.

Im not sure what the "loom" is I looked all over the engine compartment specially the passenger side looking for the damn thing....the book says it is somewhere near the motor mount, but I have yet to see anything resembleing a plug?

Well maybe "loom" isn't quite the exact description, but it's in the wiring harness bundle that runs along the frame on the passenger side. It's in the area where the front wheel is and is tie wrapped to that bundle. The bundle is actually inside some of that corregated looking plastic stuff.

Some of the lead is outside that and you'll see it if you dig deep enough, but in order to get any extra length out of it, you have to open up the cover and pull it out.

It can be a little difficult to spot from the top, if you still can't find it, remove the fender well liner on the passenger side.

Yeah, that would be a better descriptionhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I got a bit extra lenght and fished it out to the holes in my bumper and zip tied it to a hole in the bumper, tucked away when not in use but easy to find when you need it.
