: When does the high idle kick in?!?!

So, I was in Buena Vista (Central colorado about 8500 feet above sea level) and last night it got down to -10 F. I started it up and it grunted and turned over really slowly almost like a dead battery it was so cold!

Anyway, it took about a min for the temp sensor to register 1 degrees on the engine (I dont think the edge programmer displays below 0 degrees F) but the high idle never kicked in. When does it turn on?

Btw, I dont have the "Off-Star" crap in my truck (since it doesnt work in the deep in the rockies no sense on paying for that extra feature!) and dont have the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) steering wheel. Just the plain LS edition.

It usually kicks on at anything below 32 degrees, it really depends on your truck, and if you are touching anything, mine only kicks on when i am not in my truck, ie. not touching the gas pedal or brake. Also, if you have an LS, do you even get the High Idle option, i was told you have to have the interactive display to get it?!?!?!?

It reads IAT, ECT, and has to be below 32* but keep in mind humidity plays a factor. In Houston mine normally comes on at about 29*. Not sure how to engage it without the steering wheel controls but its in your manual.

There is a way to activate it even without the DIY steering wheel, it is written in your manual. I'd check it but don't have time right now to go and get it then type it here. Then it only comes on after a couple minutes of idleing if you don't touch the brake/ gas pedals. Your rpm's will then hover around 1000 rpms + or - a little.

Push the gas peddle to the floor and hit the brake three times and it should do it. Then just hit the brake to disengage.

with the engine off the key turned to run hold gas pedal to floor and tap break three times within eight seconds.

mine has kicked on in temperatures as high as 40 degrees.

i turned mine on a couple winters ago, and i guess it turned itself off when i wasn't using it because it didn't do a thing when i went to start it on the first subfreezing night we had over here. weird.

It takes a while before it kicks up - a minute or so.

I started mine this morning and it took about 20-30 secs for mine to kick in. Stays up until up to temp then drops down.

It's been 30* a couple of times here and my high idle didn't kick on. It was cold enough for the temp display in the mirror to read ICE at first.

I am finally able to say that I have a garage that the truck fits in. When I go out in the morning the garage is at 50 degrees but by the time I get to the post office which is a couple of miles away, the temp is more adjusted to what the outside temp is. When I come back out the high idle is running. I just leave it on all the time. I notice that with the winter cover over the grille it comes on less.

Like I said, it aws -10 outside and I let my truck idle for a good 5 mins before I put it in gear and the high idle never kicked in. Is there something wrong w/ the truck? Could altitude affect it as well?

When you manually turn it on (Gas pedel + brake 3 times) does it come on as soon as u fire it up or does it wait for a few seconds before it kicks on?

You turn it on and it is always on after that. Then, it acts like others have said - waits a minute or so.

Do it and it'll say somethign across the display so you know it happened.

It should idle for about 30 -45 seconds before the high idle kicks in.

this is from the 2006 Diesel Engine Supplement:

Elevated Idle/Exhaust Restrictor

The engine has a cold temperature high idle and exhaust restrictor feature which elevates the engines idle speed from 680 to 1200 rpms, and restricts the exhaust gas flow, when outside temperatures are below 32°F (0°C), and the engine coolant temperature is below 150°F (65°C.) This feature enhances heater performance by raising the engine coolant temperature faster.

For pickup models, this feature can be turned off and on using the DIC steering wheel control buttons. If your vehicle is not equipped with the DIC steering wheel control buttons, do the following to turn on this feature:

Turn the ignition to RUN, with the vehicle off.
Press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold while quickly pressing the brake pedal three times in less than eight seconds.
Release the accelerator pedal and start the engine. When the engine is started, it will slowly ramp up to the high idle speed after a delay of a few seconds up to approximately two minutes. For this method to work properly there must be no throttle or brake pedal faults.

The engine idle speed will return to normal once the following conditions are met:

Once engine coolant temperature reaches150°F (65°C).
Air intake temperature reaches 32°F (0°C).
