I picked up my 2500HD last week I already have about 700 miles on her ( I love driving this truck )http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I have a few questions since I am new to the whole deisel thing.
1) When should I do my first oil/ filter change also when should I change out my fuel filter and external tranny filter.
2) How do I go about primeing the fuel system after I change the fuel filter?
3) Is there any need to change out the gear lube in the rear right away and if so what fluid should I use I do know I have the locking diff.
4) Where is the oil and fuel filter on this motor? I see a big white filter right behind where the oil lever stick is which filter is that http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Thanks again ..

The big white one is the fuel filter, the blue one is the oil filter. I changed all my stuff out at 500 miles, including front and rear differential, spin-on allison, oil/filter, but not fuel filter, I waited for 5000 miles and did everything again and included transfer case and fuel filter. I put the full synthetic 75W-90 in the rear. There is a how-to on priming the fuel filter (I haven't done my own, but next time will).
The reason I changed out everything was that I was going to be towing and wanted to make sure everything was good to go beforehand. I would go ahead and change it out, it can't hurt.
I just felt like changing everything out was the right thing to do. There is a maintenance schedule that dmaxallitech posted in the do-it-yourself section. Check it out, it's very comprehensive.
There is a TON of information on this website. Pretty much any question you have can be answered by doing a quick search. Many of us are on our first diesel, but there are a ton of guys on here that drink diesel for breakfast (maybe), and they know a LOT.
The best part of this is that they are willing to share their knowledge with dummies like me.
Good luck,
Dennis

I'm not sure if this is true for all new trucks, but the oil filter that came with my truck from the factory was black, not the typical AC Delco blue. And it was on there TIGHT. It took a BIG pair of channel locks to get the oil filter off the first time.

good point deadfurrow. I remember someone else mentioning the same thing. Mine was blue, but it was made in January. That must be the blue filter month.

There is a small plug on the top of the fuel filter housing. Just remove it and push the round silver plunger on top of the housing. It may take several pumps before all the air is out. Once you get the air out simply put the plastic plug back in and thats it. JUST DON'T LOOSE THE PLUG!

Did mine at 750 miles. Oil filter front and rear differential fluids(the rear was a quart and a half low). Then changed the oil again at 2500 miles. The next change should be 10000 miles later. No need to change fuel filter till about 5000 miles. Enjoy your truck ---its going to last a long time!!!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
