I just picked up a 04 2500HD LLY motor.
I picked this truck to tow my 98 camaro to the track. the weight of the car and trailer is about 4600 pounds. I know the truck will pull it with no problems but what little mods can I do to get a little more HP/TQ out of her and maybe improve the MPG.
I was thinking of a cold air intake system and maybe an exhaust to start off with but I like how quiet the truck is now and I would hate it to be louder. But I am also worried about the EGT's and from reading about it on the forums the cold air kits and the exhaust helps out with that. Is there a good aftermarket exhaust that still keeps it quiet and adds more power ?? Also would the edge be good for my needs? I will only use the low settings like 1 and 2 . I have no need to race the truck ( thats why I have the Z28) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Sorry for all the questions I am new here and I want the best for my new truck
thanks
Pete

Only downside to hanging around here is that it tends to be hard on your wallet...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
First question you need to answer is if you want to leave the CAT on or take it off. Some of us have emission testing that will require it be in place. Some have SM's who'd give them grief on the warranty for modifying the exhaust by removing emission equipment. Some are removing the CAT but keeping that piece to install as necessary.
That being said, I put a Banks CAT back system on mine and got about a 125 to maybe 150 degree EGT drop at 70 MPH unloaded on the freeway. Sound level in the cab is virtually unchanged.
I've put an Edge/Attitude combo on mine and it is really something what it does to the performance. Most here seem to agree with Edge's suggestion that level 2 is okay for towing and level 4 for empty tooling around. The new Attitudes even list level 2 as "tow", level 3 as "drive" and level 4 as "race". I've not tried the level 5 with the production release so don't know what it says, but my truck didn't really like level 5 on the Beta release software.
You may realize some temp drop with a different intake system when running a programmer/module and bigger exhaust, but tests run by folks for a member here suggest the aftermarket air filters leave something to be desired, but that's a pretty hot topic.
Most here who are able to keep their foot out of it afterward, report some increased MPG with the Juice on lower levels, my MPG just seems to have dropped slightly...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I'm sure you'll get some other opinions to help you decide which upgrade options might be best for you.

Thanks for the info Zeeb...
I will have to talk to my dealer to see how they feel about having the CAT removed .
I can't wait to hook up the car trailer and take a long trip to the track http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

This is the ungodly load (9500# on a 7000# trailer with no option for lowering weight) I towed with my crew cab from georgia to nevada. All I had installed was a Banks 6 gun. It was plenty for me. I recently got the Banks exhaust, and I love the sound. Makes it sound like a real truck.. lol
Get a set of gauges as soon as you can. I'm getting some here in the near future when I can afford them.Edited by: SpoolinTurbo

Aftermath of being overweight with not enough points to properly secure the load... note acetylene rig and MIG welder in the trailer.. Had to weld the fender support back on, patch a hole in the fender, and some other stuff.

"I will only use the low settings like 1 and 2 ."
Yeah right.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Exhaust, intake, the Juice, and guages will cost you around $2000, if you go with the a-piller gauge mount.
Not bad compared to a supercharger costing around $4500 and only giving you approx 100 extra ponies.

TTS is another option, quiet 4" SS exhaust and the Tow Tune for the LLY offers excellent driveability without having to worry over powering your Allison. Use the search option above, then go here for more info.

The edge w/Attitude includes gauges so there is no need to buy additional guages and hang them on the A-piller and like akdiesel said:

Pete,
I forgot to mention one other thing about removing the CAT it that's what you decide to try doing...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
While some are doing it with no problems relating to the truck's monitoring functions, in about 70% of the cases from what I've seen here, their trucks start throwing codes. The codes are emission related and have to do with insufficient EGR flow, and I believe one about a position sensor in the EGR system.
No one seems to know at this point, why some trucks do it and others don't.

I would say some exhaust based on sound. I would try to meet up with some guys close and see if they will let you take a spin in their trucks. Sound is very subjective and all the systems sound different. I have a JK 4-5" exhaust with no muffler, I like the sound, others(like copshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif) dont. I hear TTS is pretty quiet so that ruled them out for mehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
The juice/attitude is an excellent value. Comes with guages and it has an auto back down for too much egt(you can set the temp you want) and when it senses trany slip. There are some other boxes that back down based on temp and slip but none that offer all the cool nifty features of the edge IMO I bought my juice from john kennedy too.
JMO but I dont think you will see much gain from a filter or a intake kit.
