: When Your Injectors Failed, Were You Chipped?
Max Owner 07-22-2004, 10:46 PM Intersting question was brought up in another thread. When people have had injector failures, have they had a performance mod in? Chip, or module?
Wondering if the extra performance mods are contributing. So if you have had injectors fail, chyme in and say
Yes chipped/modded
No perforamce enhancements
Curious....Edited by: Max Owner
PoolRebel 07-22-2004, 11:38 PM 03 2500HD LB7, no mods. Injectors failed at 18000 miles.
Custom Home Builder 07-23-2004, 12:07 AM yes chiped stacked but no injector truoble. i have edge with attitude and superchips stacked with 5" exaust and afe intake and no problems yet. i am now up to 49000 miles.
RickDLance 07-23-2004, 12:14 AM 1 truck yes, 2 trucks no.
hdmax 07-23-2004, 01:21 AM 1 truck yes, 2 trucks no. So there you have it!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif It is better to chip them, that way if they need replaced at least you had funhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif and besides that, it looks like more trucks fail when kept stock for to long. Like the old boats they called cars of the 60`s, you need to blow the carbon out of them once in a while.Edited by: hdmax
SpoolinTurbo 07-23-2004, 02:40 AM 11000 miles, banks 6 gun. Tech, when questioned privately said that the chip didn't do it. "Injector got stuck open somehow. No chip will make an injector stick open like that."
Best thing about it, the new engine pulls harder and better than the "stock" one. Weird.

You know whats interesting that you reminded me of; It really does seem like diesels like to be Worked Hard (not to say beaten). They seem to run better with fewer problems than the ones that are babied...
This seemed especially true with the 6.0s.
DMAX2DAMAX 07-23-2004, 07:45 AM I thought previous discussions/thought was that injector failure was more related to filtration/water than chippin??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Max Owner 07-23-2004, 11:49 AM Lookin for reasonable possibilties. The babied theory I don't like.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I drive mine very easy.
Blinky 07-23-2004, 12:50 PM Injectors failed at 60,000.... No chip the entire time... Fuel filter changed every 10,000...
Juice/Attitude went on after new injectors were installed.
Fred G 07-23-2004, 02:35 PM Not to hijack the thread, but I have heard that many of the trucks with injector failures were used for pulling heavier trailers (10K or higher) a lot of the time. I think the issue is that trucks used for towing use more fuel, hence the injectors have handled more volume and are being worn away faster by abrasive materials. Obviously, if you're chipped and pushing heavy smoke, you're moving a lot more fuel then you would be in stock form, even if you don't tow anything.
Just my .02!

This is interesting but what about fuel additives?
lttlfeller 07-23-2004, 04:32 PM My truck is stock as far as power mods and I have not had any injector/ engine/ trans problems. I personally know 4 other guys with DMAX trucks that are '03 and they have not had any injector trouble either. All except one guy tow 7,000 - 10,000 lb + trailers.
FWIW, I installed a CAT pre-OEM fuel filter around 17,000 miles and I now have 32,106 miles on it. Sometimes but not often I use Power Service Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost additve. I tow a 10,000 lb. fifth wheel about 40% of the time and usually run 65 - 70 MPH when towing. When empty I run 70 - 75 MPH. I don't drive this truck everyday as I work from home.
My opinion... I am not sure we can affect if or when injectors might fail. Seems like they are either defective or poorly installed and will fail relatively quick or they were manufactured according to design (for '01 - '02 MYs) and they might go around 100,000 miles or more before failing. Over time I hope added fuel filtration and or running additives will extend injector life and hopefully the latest style replacement injectors will have a better life expectancy.
Also, as stated earlier, it makes sense that the more fuel you burn per mile the fewer miles it could taker to see a failure... such as heavy pulling where the engine is constantly using more fuel.
One thing is for sure, I have never enjoyed a truck more than this one.
bobnlee 07-23-2004, 05:58 PM No enhancements. First failure was @ ~73K. They replaced the right bank. Second failure was ~91K. They replaced all eight.
gardnerteam 07-23-2004, 07:26 PM Had 2 fail at 67,000 on 02 while in Guadelajara, Mexico. Never chipped, no power enhancements, NADA! Fuel filter religiously changed every 6,000 miles. Filters cut open, never really very dirty. The two injectors were cracked. Poor design.

lttlfeller,
Good summary! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif It does seem that many of the injector problems we hear about in forums may be due to design, manufacturing and/or installation defects. Added filtering and additives may have little or no effect on preventing these type of injector problems. However, if one is fortunate enough to get a truck with a "good" set of injectors, better filtering and additives should help prolong their life as shown by the CAT injector study and Bosch papers on fuel quality. (The CAT study was the original basis for many of us adding supplemental filters).

ronadijcks 07-24-2004, 10:55 AM No for me. I am completely stock, and kept it that way, once I saw I was going to have a problem truck.
Keeping it stock in every regard helps with a re-acquire, because they can't blame it on aftermarket parts.
I a going on 2 weeks in the shop for injectors alone.
Not to mention several other problems.
DMAX POWER007 07-24-2004, 11:30 AM No power mods other than an intake and exhaust. My injectors failed at 72,000 miles. Replaced all eight and injector pump. Put on Nicktane pre oem filter the day I got it back and no problems since. Now just turned 100,000 miles. Plan to buy Banks or Edge soon. And feel good about it. I have used Primrose additive since injector replacement.
WanaDmxsub 07-24-2004, 05:47 PM 850 miles...no mods...2 injectors and a return line.
Max Owner 07-25-2004, 10:36 PM We can open this up to any kind of injector failure
850 MILES?????Edited by: Max Owner
samalbi 07-26-2004, 11:23 AM 2003 CC SB 4X4 all injectors replaced at 9100 miles, no engine mods, 285 tires
