I need a spare ECM. Is this correct?
As long as the ECM part number is the same, the data # doesn't really matter as I am going to reprogram it any ways.
I found a couple of ECM's with the same part # but, different Data #'s.
Thanks:)

Since you have EFI ordered, I'm assuming you're asking in regards to EFI, so I've moved it to the EFI forum.

You don't *NEED* a spare ECM for EFI. You can have another if you desire though. I bought a second for use with EFI and left my stock one untouched.

That being said, as long as it's an LLY ECM (2004.5-2005), it'll work. The operating system won't matter. What you would do is read your original ECM, then do a full flash to the new one.

And then a VAT relink.:D

Yeah... Fun stuff....

Actually, with the addition of the timers in EFI, that helped. Not 100% sure what actually made it relink (tried the three cycles etc, wouldn't fire, tried the scantool relearn then it worked, and has ever since), but it did.

Guy, where does it actually store the VAT codes? I full-flashed my ECM last weekend with the 2005 '75801 DSP2 OS, and it didn't require a VAT relink. It just worked fine.

If you do get/have a second (Backup!) ECM, and plan on using it for anything other the a factory tuned backup, you will need to have an extra license should you ever need to tune it with EFILive.

When we full flash we leave the VATS, VIN etc alone so if it is the ECM from your truck then everything should be fine.
The new VATS timers should help the relink process for sure because I don't think the scantool relink works 100% of the time. I'm not suggesting that is a EFILive problem because it will work perfect on an LS1. The Dmax ECM's do some weird things sometimes that is for sure.

Cheers,
Ross

Thanks Ross.. One other question... What happens if/when I (or anyone else) where to put the original ECM back in? Would I need to relink it, or is the VAT a code learned from the BCM that doesn't change?

I have 03 ECM that I set up with the 02 OS to use in the 01. At times I swapped out and put the 01 ECM back in with a reflash from a bench harness. No problems. Have not had to do a VAT relink.

Guys,

It's just good practice if you have swapped an ECM to do a VAT relink. Nothing more frustrating than jumping in the truck to go some where in a hurry and having a no start condition.

So when EFI Live comes out for the 06' would having an LBZ ECM be benificial at all to having one for an LLY.

EFILive for the LBZ is looking like a very attractive possibility. However, I think I would probably want a 2nd ECM to do the programming and save my stock ECM as-is for whenever I need to change back to stock.

I see that Kennedy has the LLY ECM for $400. Does anyone have a ball-park figure on the cost a 2006 LBZ ECM that can be programmed with EFILive?

As long as I don't program the stock ECM, would it also use up one of my 2 EFI licenses if I only use EFILive for troubleshooting & code reading on the stock ECM?

Would it be a plug-and-play situation to switch between the two ECMs?

Thanks.

LBZ ECM's right now are very expensive, cheapest I've seen was $280, most are asking over $450. So it might not be the best option just yet.
I paid over $500ea from memory for the two we have

Thanks Ross.

Also, thank you for all the research and development you're doing to help us get the most out of these engines. Keep it up man !!!! :ro)

Would my idea of using two ECMs, use up BOTH licenses from EFILive even if I never program the stock ECM?

Thanks.

If you only read, and scan your stock ECM, it will not use a license. Licenses are only used if you flash a calibration to the ecm. If you want to have 2 ecm and keep one as stock and one modified, and you don't reflash the stocker, it will only use one of your licenses on the modified ecm. Make since?:)

If you never program one of the ECM's it will NOT use a license. You would use just one licenes for each ECM or PCM you tune/program. The tranny can be tuned with a license that has been used for an engine. It doesn't even have to be in the same vehicle. (Now that is COOL!)

You can read as many ECM's, PCM's, TCM's as you like (As long as they are supported through EFILive.) Reading does NOT use a license.

Sounds great to me.

Thanks for the responses! :)
