: best tires for winter
DJistheman 12-01-2006, 10:09 AM the snow is coming, what tires (besides snow tires) do you think are best for the snow. stock 245's/265's or some 285's i have the stock firestone steeltex on for winter now and i was wondering if i should step up the size or just leave these ones on
emerson 12-01-2006, 10:17 AM Narrower seem to work better in the winter.
96vette 12-01-2006, 10:27 AM Bridgestone Revo's you wont be sorry.
huh, the one's i got now, i live in florida.:D
problemchild 12-01-2006, 12:30 PM I run the bfg's M/S and they work good all year.
joispoi 12-01-2006, 03:08 PM I'm thinking 46" baja claws would be good in the snow:) . I'm not sure I can turn the wheels with them though. Better stick with the 44's.
I've had 44" **** Cepek Fun country's on my truck for the last 3 years. They grip the road like velcro in snow and ice. The DC FC II's have more sipping and look to be even better. I'm thinking about a set of them for my suburban (285's)
txguppy 12-01-2006, 11:25 PM I'm no expert, but is there a difference between a good snow tire and an ice tire?
Diesel Dually 12-02-2006, 12:20 AM How about we move this to the appropriate section??
58D MTP 12-02-2006, 01:06 AM I second the Bridgestone Dueller Revo's! I had mine sipped(sp?) and they do excellent here in the interior of Alaska.
Tow Master 12-02-2006, 01:34 AM Ill throw a third vote in for Bridgestone Dueler revo's :thumb:
My dad sells tires at his auto garage. I went to the BIG warehouse when I was looking for tires for my dmax. They let me walk throught the warehouse and I saw the revo's and there a nice @ss tire. They didnt have revo's in 285/75/16 so I just got Dueler A/t
Most snow tires are ice and snow tires..... Not mutch difference.
Sinterior 12-02-2006, 07:55 AM I used to use BFG AT T/A's 3 seasons a year and was happy with them other than tread wear (no warranty on tread wear). Now I'm using the newer Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor (50,000 mile warranty) and they are IMHO at least the equal to the BFG's in snow and ice, and better in mud as they don't pack the tread up as much.
For strictly winter tires, again IMHO, Nokian make the best winter tires for cars and trucks, DW uses Nokian RSi's on her car and loves them.
I'm using the new Goodyears in comparison to my 50% worn Nokian 10LT's and would say they are about equal performance wise on ice and snow, meaning new versus half worn.
Good luck.
All other things being equal, a narrower tire is better than a wide or oversize tire in snow.
And in my opinion, the best brand snow tire is Nokian.
Ben46a 12-02-2006, 05:04 PM For strictly winter driving, the Cooper discoverer M+S is the best snow tire by far. I run a 235/85/16 tire and i have never gotten stuck plowing snow with these tires. The are siped, have good open square block tread, and even sidebiters on the sidewall.

DJistheman 12-03-2006, 05:17 PM thanks for moving my thread, i forgot all about the tires/wheels section!
right now, i have the 235s on and they seem to suck even in the rain, but i heard that having thiner tires is better in the snow, b/c wider ones will go up on the snow and lose traction
WilliamBos 12-03-2006, 05:35 PM Hey,
You won't be dissappointed with these!!

Deadeye 12-04-2006, 06:30 PM I have some Nitto Grapler All Terrain tires and they have worked well in both snow and rain.
phazar 12-04-2006, 09:53 PM For strictly winter driving, the Cooper discoverer M+S is the best snow tire by far. I run a 235/85/16 tire and i have never gotten stuck plowing snow with these tires. The are siped, have good open square block tread, and even sidebiters on the sidewall.

Cooper is the USA contract manufacturer for Nokian light truck tires, which are legendary in the snow. So it would not surprise me if there has been some "technology transfer" that Cooper is using in making its own branded snows. Coopers are excellent, and a good value.
