Yesterday, November 29th, I had my annual Colorado Front Range Diesel emission test performed. My faithful 1983 Suburban's 6.2 diesel failed. In fact, it failed big time. While on the dynamometer, at 60 MPH it created 89% opacity, at 50 MPH it created 92% opacity, and at 40 MPH it created 79% opacity. This was unbelieveable. Last year all of the tests were way below 40% opacity. Anyway, it failed. In years past, I would drive it up to the testing place which is about 30 miles from where I live, on the highway at 60 miles per hour, in 3rd gear (700R4 transmission). I felt this would clean out the crud in the exhaust system. Well, yesterday was a snowy day, and the traffic was only going about 30 to 35 MPH.
I have called a diesel injector/injector pump expert here in Denver, and he told me it would cost me about $1,600 to rebuild the pump and injectors, including labor. I said the truck is not worth spending that kind of money on it. It is in great shape, runs like a trooper, drives at 65 to 70, no sweat, but the stupid law says I have to quit driving it. It does not smoke during normal use, except going up from Georgetown, CO to the Eisenhower Tunnel on an 8% grade at 11,000 feet in elevation, and even then, not a heavy black cloud.
The diesel expert then suggested I use something called "BG 244" which he says is a cleaner of the inside of the engine. He said to get a quart, then drive down to Colorado Springs (65 miles) and back in 3rd gear to clean out the crud. Then have it retested. My question is has anyone use this BG 244? And if so what do you think about it? Is it any good? Does it do the job? My engine has 410 to 430 PSI compression, tested just last Spring, and is on it 2nd injector pump, and either 2nd or 3rd set of injectors. The engine has a little over 210,000 miles on it. I have always used Rotella, or similar diesel engine oils. I have changed the oil all during the life of the engine at about 3,000 miles. It has a new air filter, and both new fuel filters. I am in a quandry about what to do. Should I try to sell it in Nebraska or Kansas where they don't have these stupid emission tests, on e-bay or Craigslist? My basic question is about the BG 244. Is is any good and is it hard on the engine? Dabney
