In radial tires, the cross-ways belts run straight across the tread and sidewalls at a 90 degree angle.
Bias ply tire cross belts run at an angle to the tread and sidewalls.
Both styles have belts that run around the circumference of the tire.

I've never driven anything with bias ply tires, but most drag slicks and large off-road tires are bias plies.

I highly recommend not taking a step backwards and driving on bias ply tires. That would be like going back to covered wagons.

bias ply tires dont have the steel in them and in general are special purpose such as racing or offroading for street use get radials

Not a dumb question at all, BTW. Also, on bias tires, sidewall is usually thicker and the compound is usually softer.

yes on a cold morning if you live on a side street. you will feel the flat spot that the bias tires leave until they warm up.. i had them on my 78 power wagon

I run bias swampers on my truck as my all-around rig. They should work great as an off-road only tire. Not sure how they perform in snow but excellent in mud in terms of traction and self-cleaning properties. If you want to run DOT tires in the mud, TSL swampers or Boggers are the way to go IMO.

You have to ask yourself, Indoor plumbing ? or Outhouse ?? About the same amount of differance!
Mud tires are just that Mud and marginal road tires. They are NOT good winter tires. I am talking from experiance.

Bias tires are just fine for certain vehicles. I had a set of LTB Swampers on my '92 1500 and I loved them! Flat spots in the cooler weather, but it evens out after a few blocks of driving. Not that you would, but don't put them on a diesel. The fronts can't handle the weight. A friend of mine found out the hard way. He blew out both fronts on a Super Duty at 70mph. Another friend bought the 92 and the tires are still ok at nearly 20,000 miles of highway driving. Here's a pic of how they looked (34x9x16):
