: Juiced trany autopsy
ratlover 07-22-2004, 10:53 AM After 20k of being juiced in the 90 hp level and then 3 weeks ago I decided that since I was doing a trany upgrade I might as well turn it up to 125hp. I never limped my trany or zinged it. I never let it shift 4-5 under full throttle. Did the progressive method of training my alli(started at the low power levels and got it all trained and then went to the next one) I only held it wot in 5th once(and let the edge back down the power becuase it did show slip on my attitude display) truck has 27k on it. Low boost fueling to 5 and defuel on for all shifts. I floged it on the street but am still a stickler for matinence. Most miles are highway. I have a reg cab 2500hd 4x4 so I am on the lighter side than most of you guys. I plow snow so in the winter I run around with about 1k#'s of ballast in the back but I turned my juice down for the winter. I have the alli deep pan and change the spin ussualy every other oil change or more frequently. I ran regular dino dex. I changed to the deep pan at 10k or so so I drained my pan at that time.
My autopsy showed.....
The fluid was drarker than i would have liked to see, not bad and no odor but it was more of a dark cherry red as apposed to a bright red. Still not bad though IMO. When I opened the c1-c2 I figured I better not show any of you guys or you would start calling me a *****http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif. Looked perfect, you could still read the #'s on it. Then i got to the rest of the clutches, C3 and C4 looked the same, there was a slight dark band on the inner part of the friction, they were strting to get burnt. Steels didnt show any blueing but there were some noticable wear marks on some of them. C5's looked fine.
I havent gotten a chance to get the alli trained so i will hold off on my SC oppinions till I do and let you guys know how I like it, how it feels, and the fun I ran into durring the R&R and install. I should get its TAPS taken care of and get her trained by this weekend.
I miss anything? I wish I woulda just ran in the 90hp juice so i could make a definate determination if the 90hp juice is 100% safe. IMO with what I have seen(1 trans so it aint much) the 90hp juice is all I would go for a long term happy stock alli and then its borderline IMO. Maybe others will chime in with thier experience? Some tranys seem to hold more, some less??? Whos knowshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Edit: I also have realitvly small tires so that is a bit easier on the trany than big meats. 265's since new.Edited by: ratlover
StraitDiesel 07-22-2004, 10:57 AM Thanks for the information!! Did you do the upgrade yourself? Was it a PITA or easy? I want to do one myself.

Sounds about the same for my stock tranny, it held the 125 Juice with no trouble.
ratlover 07-22-2004, 11:44 AM You mean a bit of clutch discoloring and burning? c3's and 4s for you too?
I did it myself(with the help of some friends) The actual innards of the alli is pretty easy/straightforward. The R&R can be a bit of a PITA but defiantly bearable especially if you have access to all the right tools. A pit or a lift is a must IMO, it would be a real bear doing it on jackstandshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif.
An 853 bobcat with a pair of forks and a kabota excavator saved my ass from a slight miscalculationhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif And this isnt the first time I went to do a trany and relized the jack wouldnt go down far enough to roll the trany out after I lowered ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Damn!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif What do we do now??? Woulda thought I woulda learned the first timehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
Write up to follow.....it will make you guys feel better about yourselves. And it also goes to show Murphy's permanant address is my garagehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif No body got squished and the truck moves under its own power so life is good thus farhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gifEdited by: ratlover
BMDMAX 07-22-2004, 01:36 PM My C3's had a couple of spots and some minor clutch discoloration.
IBDMAX'IN 07-22-2004, 05:56 PM Can't wait to do mine. Thanks for the post ratlover
Amric 07-22-2004, 06:51 PM My C3's had a couple of spots and some minor clutch discoloration.
I ran around on 35" tires and the Quad 165hp prior to upgrading the Allison. When I took it apart, everything looked good except the C3's. Even the C3's could have gone much longer if I would have turned the power back down.
Can't wait to hear all the details.
Max Owner 07-22-2004, 11:06 PM I would love to do a Juice/Attitude and keep a stock transmission. I drive sensibly. May not be enough. But my truck is also a tow vehicle, so transmission problems are most likely.
Would like to hear more from others who have gone before.
ratlover 07-23-2004, 09:01 AM With power down and towing you should be fine. And driving sensibly is probably the big key. Even people that flog thier trucks pretty good and burn the clutches pretty bad say they dont have a problem when they take the power away and run stock.
I wouldnt run a 125 juice if you dont have the $ to upgrade later on down the road. And I wouldnt say 90hp juice is 100% safe on a stock alli, 99.9% but not 100%. Some trucks are different, some hold better some hold worse. I beat on my truck pretty good at times, but maybe my trany is on the weaker end of the alli scale? Especially since i am a wee bit lighter than most? Other than that incident of running the turbo eclipse with the 1k of balast in 125(I locked out OD), boy did it supprise him that I ran right next to himhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Max Owner 07-23-2004, 12:08 PM Sounds good, but...... I error on the the side of caution. Will definitly start a "truck fund" for a trans upgrade.
I have done stupid things by not thinking enough
I have done stupid things by thinking too much.
People say ya get smarter with age.
Heavy sigh.
I zinged mine a few times with only propane but hammer down in fifth uphill.
When I go the juice I could zing it at will with lp and 90hp.
Tranny always came back to earth without a hitch.
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-23-2004, 04:52 PM I'll let ya know what I find tomorrow.........

GMC-2002-Dmax 07-24-2004, 11:46 PM First report:
She's stripped down and almost re-assembled.........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Here's what I found after 36K miles of abuse............http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif running Transynd with 6K filter changes..........
C1.....was perfect...........no wear at all, that was with a lot of brake stands and hole shots......and big power being pushed at it on the street...........
C2... Completely Smoked.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.......every clutch was BLACK, steels showed definate signs of heat damage and burn marks......but the clutches, BOY were they ever toasted.
C3......Some browing and blackening with streaking on the inside edges of the clutches......steels still at first look perfect, but after looking closely evidence of some heat dis-coloration was there.
Found the oiler squirter hole in the C3 apply piston was assembled at 3:00 from the factory not slightly off 12:00 where it is supposed to be.
Also the big snap ring that holds it all in place was installed in a location not the same as the installaion instructions say.
C4 & .....Looked brand new at first, but in fact they all had some heat damage as well on the clutches and steels.
C5 was perfect.......no damage whatsoever .
We did not have too much trouble in taking the C1/C2 rotating assembly apart.
I am looking forward to Monday and trying it out...........
GET 'ER DONE.............
