the prev owner/dealer threw away the original filter mag. Bought a new one from merchant auto. When I put it on the filter it seems to just barely cover over some of the outer drain holes. I take it this is normal?
Also since I just did a whole flush procedure I want to just change the filter and not drain, if I pull the external filter is it going to gush out at me or drain just whats in the filter?
thanks

You won't lose much fluid just removing the filter, only enough to make a mess on the garage floor. The magnet should be 1 3/4" wide with a 3/4" hole in it.

If you use an OE Allison filter you won't have any problems with the magnet, and I'd suggest filling the new spin on before you install it. There will only be an ounce or two that comes out of the trans.

yep make sure its an alison spin on all the others have the holes in the center and the magnet will block them off

I run the factory magnet and also a computer hard drive magnet on the bottom outside of the filter. The comp hard drive magnet is sooooo strong. Just some insurance.
If you change the filter when the tranny is cold, you won't spill a drop. the fluid level in the filter will be down in the filter. Also, as was previously said, use only a oem Allison filter, also available from Merchant Auto.
Changed my external allison filter the other day. That magnet seems to be pretty strong and had all kinds of crud around it. I wiped it off real good and put it on the new filter. I kept pouring the Dexron VI into the new filter until it was full to the top and would not take anymore. It appears that the filter holds what 7 or 8 ounces of fluid? Also I noticed that my transmission dipstick has fluid or crud on the top of it like it has been blowing some out. Does anyone else have that problem?
Other than me spilling a little fluid when I re installed the new filter that little filter change was a breeze.
