: What brand oil filter do you use?
whatnot 07-21-2004, 05:58 PM I just found this on another forum (chevy truck forum) and thought it was interesting.

I had been buying Penzoil filters because it was the only other choice besides fram where I usually buy them. I will be using AC Delco from now on.
I have been using Purolator, Pure One for about 6 years. Delcos aren't usually available where I shop.
conradv 07-21-2004, 06:15 PM I use Napa Gold (which are relabled WIX filters I believe)
ANYTHING BUT FRAM!
Texas Diesel Guy 07-21-2004, 06:19 PM FRAM ToughGuard or DoubleGuard only. ANYTHING BUT WIX!!!!
conradv 07-21-2004, 06:27 PM Have you read the posts about Fram filter failures on this and other diesel sites? Do some searching...
(I assume that they are the same filters for the Duramax & the older diesels?)Edited by: conradv
bowtie 07-21-2004, 06:30 PM I Won't put a fram on my worst friends powerstroke. Heard many horror stories while selling parts for 5 years.
Turbine Doc 07-21-2004, 06:42 PM Baldwin on AMZOIL dual remote mount only way to go on a K series truck IMO to get away from the 90 deg 4x4 adapter.
steiner43511 07-21-2004, 07:16 PM conrad: i just did a search on the whole forum and nothing came up about fram causing engine failure. my 94 chevy 1500 with a 4.3 v6 sitting at home with 204,000 miles shows that frams arent as bad as everybody makes them out to be. the only filter, i mean only filter, that has ever been on this truck is a fram extra guard ph3980. this truck still runs like it was brand new. i have never put any money into this truck for repairs. my mom is on her third minivan and they have all had frams. my brothers jeep and s10 have only ever seen frams. my dads truck and my grandpas truck have only ever seen fram. and none of these have had a 'horror story' like everybody blames fram for.
conradv 07-21-2004, 07:29 PM A few links - I don't have time to search as I have to catch a ride home. A lot of hearsay, as there is with anything, but after a few years of hearing (& seeing pics of) the same old thing, I just can't go with a Fram.

bowtie 07-21-2004, 08:57 PM Well my dad use to say the same thing till after an oil change using a fram that he lost all oil pressure. He, not believing it was his fram, changed everything including 2 sending units and the factory gauge. Finally he put a Wix on and everything was back to normal. I have also looked at many oil filters cut open and fram just don't hold up to some of the other name brands inside. It may just be that I'm use to seeing aircraft parts and filters in my job with the Air Force.
Guess thats just my 2 cents worthEdited by: bowtie
w_huisman 07-22-2004, 09:14 AM I ran across that oil filter study online a couple of years ago, and I've been using Wix filters ever since. It's the only recommended filter available here in my little town. Though, now that I think about it a little more, the hardware store here might have AC Delcos. I'll have to go look. The study in the link above makes the comment that the Delco filters are considerably cheaper than the Wixs, so I spose I oughta at least check it out. I know I pay $5.xx for a Wix.
Turbine Doc, there is a 90 degree adapter on my K2500? i just know its a chore to remove the filter (fram - ha!). can you provide any links for the amsoil remote mount? where do you mount these? if you run the amsoil bypass what oil change intervals do you keep? Sorry for all the questions . . .
justin25taylor 07-22-2004, 11:18 AM Bob I have used the amsoil setup you describe for 200K+ It is expensive about $150 for the kit it mounts on the divers side next to the engine. It has a little draincock that you take a sample of oil about every 10 k and send it in they send you recomendations on what to do from there. Mine come back ok till 20k and i change it anyway i am scared to leave it any longer. the downside is the oil is more expensive and if anyone else drives the truck make sure they know to only add amsoil only or you will have to change early. try www.amsoil.com

Hm, I've been using Delcos and now start using Purolators, as there's not much choice here. I don't know what the previous owners did, probably Delcos.
Parts from Delco are about 50--70% delivered extremely delayed (takes about two weeks on less-common parts) and errorneous or not at all. Thus, I've changed the dealer, and I'm getting the Purolators from them instead of the Delcos.
Oil and filter are being changed every 10kkm, i. e. about each 5--10 weeks.
THX for the link to that study, though! It seems that the Purolators are ok :)
BTW, $3 for an oil filter?? They cost almost EUR 7 here!
gmctd 07-22-2004, 12:50 PM AC, sometimes STP, 8oz STP each 3kmi oil change - smmoooooth!
That 'study' was done back in the late '90s, so prices reflect that era.
2 wix or 2 Deutsch for $3
2 AC for $5.
Etc....Edited by: gmctd
Turbine Doc 07-22-2004, 01:14 PM Bob T I got my kit from Kennedy, also available from Lube Specialist, Kennedy has an adapter that allows replacement of Amzoil unique filters with Baldwins which he also sells at very good price in case lots. NO NEED to run special oil, QUALITY DINO Oil IMO just as effective, (I'm not re-opening Dino vs, Syn debate again)
I mounted mine under the drivers floor pan.
I run Rotella or Delo whichever is on sale, I used to run a 3500-4000K intervals, last oil sample said I could double that based on test result, will be checking that again as I'm coming up on that interval soon.
