Hello everyone. I own a 2004 D/A (LB7). I only have about 10000 miles so far. The last two oil changes, I change my oil and filter every 3000 miles, I've noticed a fresh oil odor. To get an idea what I'm talking about, pull the dip stick out, and smell the oil. That's what it smells like. Sometimes when I'm stopped at a traffic light I get that smell when the A/C is running. I've crawled under my truck numerous times looking for a leak or something, nothing. In fact I'm a nut about keeping the truck clean and I don't like oil leaks, but it's not leaking. It just has the odor of warm fresh oil. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks

some oils will exhibit a smell when new... Rotella comes to mind as being one of them

To dmaxalliTech, The odor stayed throughout the entire 3000 miles. I just got back from Colorado, and I tow a 12000 lb. 5th wheel, so when I got back I changed the oil. I thought that maybe it would go away, but as soon as I get on the road and make a stop, there it is again. Do you think it is coming out of the dip stick tube? I checked the "O" ring and it looks "ok". Have you or anyone experienced this before? By the way I'm using Delo oil, recommened for a diesel motor. Thanks

I experience the same thing. I figure its normal, but it may not be. But I do use Rotella synthetic and that was mentioned as a culprit. My dad's 'max with dino Mobil does not have that smell.


Interesting...

With Rotella synthetic, my truck has an odor once in a while under the right conditions. Sometimes notice it several days in a row and then it goes away.

OK apparently I am not the only one that noticed this odor. Now does anyone know where it is coming from? Dip stick tube maybe? Thanks

the engine crankcase vent is external and the fumes go right out that vent. I have noticed it on quite a few different oils

Where might one find that vent?
