What is needed to pull a wide load(approx 12 feet) on interstate highways? This is not a commercial load. It is a large boat. If permits are required, do I have to get a permit for each state? Any idea what the necessary permit would cost? What type of safety markings are necessary? Would I need an escort vehicle?Edited by: mndmax

You would need a CDL and medical card I think. Hours you can tow are limited to daylight. I have a friend i was going to tow a boat for and these were some of the issue's I found out about. Maybe more.

You will have to contact the DOT for each state you intend to tow the load in. Be prepeared with a detailed route including refueling locations, exact load height, width, length and weight. At 12', depending on the route, you will probably be required to have at least one qualified escort.
Off the interstate, you will have to contact each and every local municipality you will travel thru. (using the local roads)
Permits are cheap (compared to fines). They will also give yo a warm fuzzy that your boat will actually fit down the road.
Oh, and Joey D is right. CDL and current medical required for all special loads.
You could start by tracking down a State Trooper commercial vehicle enforecment. If you want I can ask my neighbor. He is a Trooper.
