: Steering Wheel Shaft Clunking
Uplink 07-20-2004, 10:38 PM Anybody had this happen yet??? I have an 04 with only 9K on it and over the weekend I heard a clunking noise coming from the the steering colum, I have no play on the steering wheel but when making a turn you can hear it clunk clunk clunk....http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif It all started when I used the 4wheel high to move the trailer on a dirt lot.
I think the bearing is bad but if anybody has any other ideas??
04 GMC 4X4,CC,A/D.
jbplock 07-21-2004, 07:37 AM This is a common problem... The fix is to grease the intermediate steering shaft... My 03 started clunking around 20kmiles.. Had the grease job and it's still OK at 29kmiles.
See the following topic in the TSB forum for more info...

Uplink 07-21-2004, 04:56 PM Thanks I found it last night after I did the post.
ronadijcks 07-27-2004, 01:29 PM Problem is, the grease is not a fix. It is a band-aid. You will most likely have to have it redone several times, during the coarse of ownership. Especially if you use the truck like a truck. I have had it done 6 times in 31k miles. GM supposedly has redesigned the shaft, but I am not 100% sure of this rumor.
dmaxalliTech 07-27-2004, 02:50 PM ronadycks, sounds like the guy doing your greasing isnt doing a good job. I have done several and never had to repeat...
Just a few days ago, GM has released a new shaft that is improved and supposed to fix it as well
jonekelly 07-27-2004, 05:20 PM Thank goodness for the fix. Anyone seen the new shaft yet? Did it go back to having an inner teflon-type sleeve like years ago?
Service manager told me to call him next week after he has a few in stock. Man am I hoping this fixes my steering looseness. They already had one overnighted and said it worked great - a noticeable improvement over greasing. Also said the new bullentin says to stop greasing the intermediate shaft as a solution. Anyone know if this is true?
I had mine greased by two different mechanics at two different shops. Never made a bit of difference.Edited by: jonekelly
VFRRider 07-29-2004, 07:08 PM Ok, just got off the phone with the dealer. I was going to do the job myself, but the dealer wants $ 102.00 for the shaft http://oilburners.net/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif (http://oilburners.net/forums/misc.php?action=getsmilies&s=#). Shaft is the correct description. Anyone know where one could be had without the 100% markup??
jonekelly 07-29-2004, 09:47 PM Mine is being replaced for free under warranty. We have the same truck. I have 18,000 miles. Can't imagine you have many more than that.
I had the new shaft put in my truck about 5,000 miles ago and it is starting to clunk again. I have had this issue each Chevy Truck I have owned, a 2000 1500, 2001 1500HD and now the 2002 2500HD.
RonJT 08-20-2004, 04:20 PM Wow--if the replacement shaft is clunking....can the new shaft be lubed like the old one??
I wonder If I should keep my old one just in case--at least that one you can lube.
jonekelly 09-08-2004, 11:58 AM My problem has been fixed. Mine really was a looseness in the steering that I thought was coming from the tilt mechanism. It turned out to be a bearing in the steering shaft just under the steering wheel.
I have seen this same problem on various Chevy models including brand new ones sitting in the showroom. I am just happy that the only problem with my truck is fixed. I found a really good service manager at JBA Chevrolet in Glen Burnie who knew exactly what my problem was. Too bad the service manager at the dealership where I purchased it didn't even think enough of me to take a look at it. He refused to look at it or have the regional Chevy rep look at it. Chevy Customer Service recommended I try another dealership. Thank goodness I did. I knew the first service manager saying this is the way they are on all the trucks was bs. I definitely plan to follow through letting the dealership owner know my experience as well as customer service.

Had it done 6 times at 3 different dealers, and it still is doing it to this day! Repurchase. I should have the new vehicle in 3-4 weeks.
Thanks for the post.
dpitz52 09-18-2004, 05:46 PM Having mine replaced next week (warranty)...the shop said a lot are coming back to have the steering shaft replaced. Don't know when it started...play the stereo too loudly!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
