Hello, I have a 2001 with 55K miles and it starts right up, runs 5 seconds and quits, and has been getting worse over time from once a week to daily, been going on about 6 months now. You go out and start it for the first time of the day and it starts right up, then it shuts off just like I turned the key, and the only way it will start back up is to crack the bleed screw and give it one or two pumps to get the air out and it fires right up with no problems the rest of the day. I tried filters, checking the WIF sensor, o-rings on filter, and a new style bleeder screw with o-ring washer with no improvment. It had the fuel pressure regulator changed @ 37K miles back in 04', and a new common fuel rail in 03' @ 34K miles. There are no signs of fuel from injectors bleeding down in oil either. Also it seems to do it more often when it is in a cold enviroment, say below 65*. Someone suggested the filter base needs to be replaced, they say there are non replacable o-rings in the base and that they had there's replaced by the dealer and problem solved, possible? Any ideas? Thanks

It sounds like the manual pump o-ring has a leak. Check there. Its been a problem in the past with several of the members here over the years.

thats funny...thats how long the theftloc device(five or less seconds) takes when the key is worn out or bad?, try another key. its worth a try?

Check the air filter minder, if it's red the air intake is restricted. can cause no starts and sudden shutdowns after a few seconds. Give it a check to rule that out anyway.

Good Luck

Thanks guys, I know its not the filter, replaced awhile back with a AEM, o-ring on pump? Think I can take that apart an acually buy a o-ring for it?, or whole new base?

Don't rule out the injectors yet. I had a similar problem with truck dying but needing to be re-primed. It turned out to be a bad injector stuck in the open position.
Very frustrating. I spent many hours and a couple $$$$ trying to find a leak and replace o-rings.
I had no diesel in my oil, but slightly increased smoke from my exhaust. Other than that truck ran great with bad injectors except for the no start.
Good luck

I "borrowed" the following from Frank Blum's Garage (Thanks, Frank!). The picture shows the pump components. Should be able to get the parts from Mr. Goodwrench, or contact Frank and ask where he got the "special" seals....
