I would not use synthetic oil for a minimum of 15k or 500 hours. The truck will take a good while to fully seat everything. You only want to use syn "after" the break-in period.

I switched my truck to Mobil Delvac 1 around 12K miles. The engine used about 1/2 quart of dino oil every 3000 mile oil change (Chevron Delo 400) before switching to the synthetic oil. After switching to Delvac 1, the truck went 6000 miles without measurable oil consumption. If I had to do it again, I would have switched earlier. My opinion of course, others will vary.

I also changed the Allison to Transynd at around 6,000 miles.Edited by: OC_DMAX

I changed all fluids to 100% synthetic at 3000 miles, and now at 20,000 miles, it never ran better. I do not use any oil between changes, and average 19mpg driven agressivly. The rings continued to seat even after the change to synthetic as seen with continued improvements in milage.

I change all mine at 6K per Mobil's recommendation. Never add any between changes. I am sure the new engines come with chrome molly rings. It is my understanding that they are lapped perfectly round by the manufacture. The days of using two quarts of oil in the first 500 miles are long gone. Later! Frank

Changed oil at 1K and 2K miles then went to Amsoil 15W-40 before going to Montana. Not a whole lot of breaking in these days.

Greg,

How long due you run between changes? Assume a single Amsoil filter no dual bypass setup. Thanx, Steve

I have customers that are running 15K-20K miles and they tow every day. That is without a by-pass system.

I switched to Delvac 1 at 2,200 miles. I'm right around 37,000 miles now and it still doesn't burn oil between changes and runs like a ... well, like a well oiled machine (sorry, I couldn't help myself). I think the wives are telling tales.

As Greg stated, these trucks do not need broke in like they used to. I changed over to synthetic at somewhere around 980 miles. And I have never had any noticeable oil loss between my oil changes.

As for oil change intervals, I say do not go over 10,000 miles regardless what Amsoil may tell you. But it is your truck, so do as you see fit.

I have the Amsoil dual by-pass oil filter setup, and I use Mobil Delvac-1. At 5,000 miles I change the secondary filter and top off the oil, then at 10,000 miles I do a complete oil change. I also change the Allison spin on at that time. With transmission fluid change every 25,000 miles while using Allison's own Transmission fluid.
