All the stock 6.5 autos I've seen do about 160rwhp.

Don't know torque at the wheels, but it's about 400 at the flywheel.

No need to hang on or to wear a seatbelt.

98's should have been rated at 195 hp and 430 lb-ft at the flywheel. 94-97 (early) should have been rated at 190 hp and 385 lb-ft at the flywheel.

For the 98's there were 2 different models. The L56 and the L65

the L56 is rated at 195hp @2600rpm with 430lbs of torque on an auto and 420lbs on a manual

The L65 HO is rated at 215 hp @3400 rpm with the same 430lbs for auto and 420 manual

The auto tranny is the 4L80E

The 215 HP rating never made it to production. It was for the 1999 model year, but was cut from the line-up when GM decided to go with the Isuzu Duramax.

L56 has EGR, is lower of power ratings. 1500, some 2500.

L65 is HD, no EGR . Some 2500, all 3500.

215hp version never made it into production - no room for front-mounted charge air cooler.

High Intake Air Temps would have defeated any power increase without one.

what can be done to increase hp and torq on this truck? are there any chips or plugin boxs for the 6.5?

Read Turbine Doc's post on improvements - he's runnin' what he's preachin'.

It's a couple months back, so do a search on 6.5 improvements.

Check out the thread in this link: http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10883&KW=6%2E5+Performance (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10883&KW=6%2E5+Performance). Most of my modifications are listed in my signature. This combination works very well. I'm also convinced that there is more power available. The quest continues!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifEdited by: ronniejoe

No, the L65 in both 98 and 99 was rated at 195 hp and 430 lb-ft. The 215 hp / 430 lb-ft rating is what never made it to production.
