My 2001 GMC has an air bag light on.I tried to scan it myself with a snap on scanner,but couldnt establish communication.I took it to the dealer for unrelated work,and they tried,and couldnt establish communication either.I checked all the fuses with my power probe,and all are good.Dealer says I need a new diagnostic module ( SIR) before they can go any furthur.Has anyone had this or have any help they can offer on this.
I am very mad at myself,I bought this truck with the light on,thinking it was a seat belt light,since one seat belt was torn and retracted into itself.(They repaired that as part of the deal)I bought it from a GMC dealer in NJ, unaware they could sell a truck retail with an airbag malfunction and not disclose it either.So I bought it as is,no warranty,so I fuess I am going to end up eating this one.One thing i find odd is that the only clue I have is a small picture of someone sitting with a belt on and a ball in there lap.There is no actual warning light,or anything in the message center window to indicate that something so important isnt working.All my other vehicles have an actual light that says either AIR BAG,or SRS. ABS has a light that says ABS,check engine has the same,but no air bag light?Its odd that the message center will show securtiy when the door is open,or cargo light on,but no AIR BAG malfunction.I am going to repair it myself,im just looking up the component locations now,my first thought was to find the SIR module,and verify its getting power,and ground.Look for any damage to the harness,and take it from there.I would appreciate any help.
