: Test for those who dont use fuel additives
letsgo 07-19-2004, 09:05 PM Try this simple test, after I think you will become a believer in adding fuel additives.
I always add fuel additive at every fillup, when I travel (tow) I carry 4, full 5 gallon diesel cans (plastic) just in case, however in my haste to travel across the southern states I did not add any additive when filling the 4 containers , after 3 months I decided to use the canned fuel ( CA. fuel was expensive). After putting all the fuel in the trucks' tank I noticed black spots on the inside of all 4 plasticcontaners, yep it was fungus, yet I have never had any fugus in these same tanks when adding fuel additive.
the oxygen in the diesel fuel along with any water either from a fillup or condensation will grow fungus.
well think about it and good luck
GMC2500HD 07-19-2004, 10:03 PM Well no need to worry about that, mine does not stay in that tank long enough. lol...

Since my truck is not a daily driver, I put in a Stanadyne Biocide with every fillup. The station where I buy 99% of my fuel adds a lubricity and cetane boost additive. It's a touch more money per gallon, but works for me.
We had one of our reserve engines that's not driven much at all, quit one day for no reason. The entire fuel system had to be replaced since it was plugged up with the nasty little critters...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gifEdited by: Zeeb
Diesel Power 07-20-2004, 12:13 AM i use primrose 405. $4 a bottle. i use 3 oz per 40 gal. of diesel, so i get 160 gal. worth out of a bottle. That adds 2.5 Cents to each gallon of diesel i buy...

Hmmm let's see, I bought a case of FPPF Total Power from John Kennedy in January of 2002. I've added it to every tank of fuel that I've put in my truck. That's 30 months, 79,000 miles, 4,340 gallons. That comes out to a WHOPPING 2.3 cents a gallon to protect my injectors, pump and investment in my truck!
You're right - DO NOT put that kind of insurance into your truck - money wasted!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Lessee, that means that if you save 2.5 cents per gallon you'll have enough savings for a new set of injectors after 160,000 gallons! (If your injection system makes it that far!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Oh, BTW, I still have over a quart and a half of treatment left - so it's actually a bit less!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Idle_Chatter 07-20-2004, 08:04 AM Okay, you got me started last night and I had to do some more "ciphering."http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Raw additive cost: $33.33/gal or 26.04 cts/oz
Additive use: 4 oz in my 32 gallon aux tank for a 1024:1 ratio fuel/additive
3 oz in my 24 gallon OEM for a 1024:1 ratio
At 18 mpg, I use 0.06 gal/mile or 7.7 oz/mile
at a 1024:1 ratio, that's .0075 oz additive/mile or 0.195 cts/mile
0.195 cents/mile! WHOA! I can't take that kind of financial drain!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
AND lest we forget - the additive is also FUEL! It's not inert - it's burning too - and prepaid, up front.
I respect your choices for your truck - but your "cost per mile" theory doesn't hold water (but, unfortunately for you - your fuel, tank, lines, filter and injectors DO!!)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gifEdited by: Idle_Chatter

TommJr 07-20-2004, 08:53 AM Question:
I also run FPPF total power + Cetane boost. When you say 50/50 mix, what exactly are you mixing.
The bottle states to add 1 quart to 125 gallons for total power, and 1 quart for 60 gallons on cetane boost. That breaks down to like 3 to 4 ounces for a 27 gallon tank.
So when you add 50/50, are you adding 1.5 ounces of each to fuel, or are you adding the full amount of additive, to equal 8 ounces of mix?
T.P.N. 07-20-2004, 09:10 AM I add 3 oz. of each (total of 6 oz. combined) per fill up (approx 30 gal.) . . . . slightly more than the bottle recommends . . . .

hdfatboy 07-20-2004, 01:15 PM Where is the best place to buy Stanadyne. I live in So. Cal and dont care if it's online or somewhere down here. Any help would be appreciated.
Chevysrus 07-20-2004, 01:56 PM Where can one buy the Primrose 405 other than AV Lube???
I have looked for it on line and at every truck stop between SF and Seattle. Can't find it. Plenty of other stuff out there to use, but everyone here seems to like the Primrose......
So if it's so popular why can't I find it on the shelf somewhere?
If I get it from AV Lube then there is shipping cost and the waiting and you know, it's like the night before Christmas all over again! LOL
I once asked at a Local Flyng J why they did not carry it, the guy looked at my pickup and laughed.....guess they could not sell enough of it to stock it, since the big rigs don't seem to demand it.
I may have to relent and call AV Lube....

Here in Ohio another 2 cents was added to gas prices in the form or a tax. People bitched about it for two months, And here you are adding 2.3 cents without a carehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
You are trying to make your truck last longer, I admire that! I do the same thing, just in different ways.
I know several guys with older diesel trucks, (Some old Military 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton 6x6`s) some as old as 1962 and these trucks set sometimes 6 months at a time. I am sure the diesel is as bad as it will ever get.
My truck never sets more then 4 days. and in 23 months I have added more then 65,000 miles without any fule problems. Who is to say your truck will out last mine? It's a flip of the coin.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Max Owner 07-21-2004, 11:47 PM Do a Search on the web. I found a place in Texas. Also in Wisconsin. Their prices were good. What killed it for me was brokerage fees at the boarder.
donmiller714 07-22-2004, 08:02 AM I see that there are a variety of choices for additives-I personally use Standyne Performance but not for any other reason than it was one of the ones cited in the TSB(?) on additives (someplace in this forum).
My question is, what's the difference between brands? I know about the alchol-free thingy and demulsification vs. emulsification issue as well, so that aside, what's the diff?
btw: this is where I buy it on the web hdfatboy: http://www.dieselpage.com/add1.htm

Wickedsprint 07-22-2004, 10:19 AM Funny..I did the same thing when I traveled from florida to here, and ended up not using the diesel in the plastic tank for several months, I finally poured half in my truck, no spots. The rest is still sitting in my shed, I'll check it for spots tommorow, thanks for the information.
hdfatboy 07-22-2004, 02:03 PM Thanks donmiller714 and Heartbeat Hauler. I appreciate the info on finding the stuff
