: What dealer said about fuel additive

Picked up my truck yesterday - had it serviced at 10K miles. I noticed it ran quieter and shutdown nice and smooth, too. I noticed "fuel additive" on the RO, so I called the service advisor. He said

' GM has a bulletin out as of November 8 that says that, due to the sulphur being removed from diesel fuel, GM recommends adding a diesel fuel additive such as Standyne every 6,000 miles, although it is not required '

I've been thinking about using Stanadyne anyway, but now I guess I do it for sure. Runs noticeably quieter.

I run stanadayne in my 6.5 every other fill up. I was going to use it in my Duramax but the manual said not to. :confuzeld

I run Primrose Powermaster 405C in every tank and have since day one, at 1.25 ml per gallon. Use a graduated cylinder and measure it out based on the fuel gauge reading. Filled up today, 20 gallons took 25.0 ml (or cc) of additive and never have had a problem yet. Just dump it in the tank and pump in the fuel. But this is in Central California's mild climate so I don't have to worry about freezing or jelling.

Folks in severe winter areas should check with their dealer or fuel distributor for a recommended additive or mix of additives. There are many brands out there, Stanadyne, Primrose, Amsoil, to name a few, and now they are offering specifically formulated lubricity additives. My main goal is to keep the lubricity up, gain some degree of cetane improvement, and prevent moisture concentration in the fuel tank.

I use the concentrated additive where a quart treats 3000 gallons of diesel because it is cheaper. All you need to measure it is a graduated cylinder or any measure that is graduated in ml or cc (they are equal). The dose is 1.27 ml per gallon, but I round it down to 1.25 ml because that's close enough for government work.

The manual says not to use an additive with any type of water emulsifier (i.e. alcohol) in it. I have been using Power Service with every fill up- because two dealers recommended it to me.

I have been using Stanadyne since the second tank. I add Jet A sometimes and then I add Stanadyne lubricity formula as well. What is the number on the service bulletin?

I'd like to see that bulletin to see how much they recomend. Once every 6k would only be for cleaning, I would guess they are trying to reduce injector problems caused by fuel contamination. On my current diesels I use a biocide once a year and only use other additives for cold weather or If I am going to be working the truck hard.

I've been using Stanadyne since the truck was new. You definitely don't want to use anything with a water emulsifier (alcohol) in it as it totally removes all the lubricity. I know that Stanadyne demulsifies the water (causes it to form larger drops) so that it is caught by the filter/water separator. My brother is a diesel mechanic and he recommended Stanadyne, but did say that there are several good ones out there that do not contain alcohol.

I'm yet to fine one that has alcohol other than the emergency anti-gel stuff.

Where abouts are you getting your Stanadyne in Canada? From the Dealer?

None of the main ones carry it that have seen they have a dealers list on there site, but no around here will beat Scheid's (http://www.scheiddiesel.com/stanadyneULSD.htm) price on the 1/2gal even with shipping.

Kootenay Fuel Injection in Cranbrook has it discounted if you buy it by the case.

Give Tony a ring, He'll sell it to ya or point you in the right direction!

The story I got here (Ontario) that the Stanadyne that I knew (and used last winter) is NO LONGER. With the ULSD they have had to change the formula and there is apparently a 3rd part number now for the Stanadyne we used to use.

It is going by another name ????? but still made by Stanadyne. This came from the only top - notch diesel injection gurus in town and their supply has been wiped out and on back order for over 2 weeks now.

Does anyone know of the actual new name?

I have not heard of a change. They are required to put the ulsd label on it now. That is the only change. Maybe it is different in Canada.

Hey, BlackMAx...
I've got a 470ml bottle in my hand that I just picked up - part number on the back is 29409C. I don't think it's changed, but I'm not sure - I've only bought a couple since buying my rig a short time ago...but want to start regular doses since the fuel change to ultra low.

I looked all over the town I'm in, couldn't find any - called the local stealer who told me that although they recommend Stanadyne, they only had Kleen-Flo on the shelf... Go figger...

Ended up getting this from a local VW/Audi shop - not a dealer. I know VW is real big on the juice, so most of their shops probably stock it. But, I would like to find a better price - anyone got a suggestion for on-line or other up here in Canada?

I don't believe I see that number here, "http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/showfile.asp?id=3384" Do you see a 38565 anywhere? Are we talking about the blue bottle?

Daequitz, Yup - the Blue Performance bottle. The labels at the site are newer - my bottle doesn't have the bright yellow "ULSD" banner, and I'm expecting that the part number (on the back at the bottom left and also the last part of the bar code on the bottom right) I'm peering at is a Canadian part number. I must have an older stock bottle...typical up here... takes forever to get new stuff.......

Bulletin # 1871386. I just received it in the mail from my dealer, in response to my question. That's service! The bulletin refers to GM PArt # 88861009 "Diesel Fuel Conditioner" (#88861038 Canada).

Now, my question is does the additive make the exhaust more stinky, and/or increase emissions?? My truck seems more smelly to me now on this tank with fuel additive.

Getting Stanadyne is a pain. Power Service is just as good and available at any farm supply store and a lot of truck stops. I always use either Power Service or Power Kleen.

I buy it from my brother and he just sends it to me on the bus. It is a good deal because I get his price for it, not retail.

You can buy the Stanadyne at any Camping World and it's pretty cheap there from what I remember.

We just hit -35 below here in Fairbanks Alaska and I have been using 8oz Standyne on every fill-up. I just had a "low fuel pressure code" "P00087" thrown the other day at when it was about -25 with degraded performance. I was able to drive it home and plug it in...the next morning it was still showing the CEL but the performance was back...took it to the dealer and they pulled the code and cleared it for me. I have not had a problem since but have leaned off the Stanydyne to a 4oz ratio and have not thrown codes since.....ANYONE in cold regions have simlar problems?...THANKS

the last time I bought Stanadyne Performance Formula, I got it mail order from Midwest Fuel Injection (http://mwfi.com/Fuel-Additives/performance_form.html). Scroll down on this page and you can find it (#ADD38565C - Case of 12 16-oz bottles for $55.44 + shipping)

I've used it on every tank full, since the first fuel tank full and add 4-oz for every 15 gallons of fuel. I've not had any problems whatsoever even when cold starting @ -10°F without using winter cover or plugging in the block heater.

Me too here. Silver bottle summer and white bottle winter. I assume you mean "Diesel Kleen" not "Power Kleen"

So far the ULSD Stanadyne Performance formula is not available in Northern Ontario Canada yet....

An injection systems re-manufacturing place here in town hasnt had any in weeks let alone have the new ULSD version.

Found an regular Performance Formula bottle at a dealer charging $20 per bottle. What a rip!!!! But its better than nothing.

Diesel Dog,
Thanks for the tip on Allison filters I don't know why I didn't think of that.
As for Stanadyne I think they only sell it through fuel injector service stores. Go to their website click on products and services and there you'll find a dealer locator, click on that and follow it through. Their website is very slow. I found a dealer in Campbell River that way.
