: DIC - Am I being too picky?

I purchased the LT version of my truck, and part of that upgrade was the Digital Information Center. Of course, it is a neat little gadget, giving you the MPG info and Fuel used, etc..

Mine indicates that I use 22 gallons, and when I fill up, it actually uses 24. That of course makes all the mileage and trip calculations useless. Think about when the refuel light comes on, and claims you have 30 miles left before running out of fuel. I could never rely on it because it is so off.

Am I being too picky, or do I have a valid complaint? The dealer told me the DIC is just for looks. It is not meant to be accurate. I swear, that is what he told me and they wrote on the work order that it was within tolerance. According to them, it is an 'Average' , not exact numbers.

Why pay for it? Any thoughts?

its based on calculations and only meant to be approx.

mine does the same.....its junk....makes me wonder about all these folks on here saying there getting 24 and 26 mpg from reading that. the same one never answer when i ask how many miles they are getting per tank and if they have a short bed or long.

The DIC was pretty accurate until I put on the juice module. Now it is a little off.

Are you guys waiting 2 or 3 minutes for the diesel fuel FOAM to dissapear then you carry on with the fill up???

That foam blocks at least a gallon of additional fuel, if not more, depending on the fuel temperature going into the tank.

Just a thought, good luck

Mine is very accurate. Said I used 18 gal at last fill, and thats what it took (within a few tenths of a gallon).

Once you install the Juice or any inline chip it skews the DIC because it dosent know the truck is actually using more fuel than the stock computer is seeing.

Chip = incorrect DIC MPG

Makes it look better than your really getting

Tire size makes a difference. The DIC does not calculate for larger tires.

Also if you fill your tank all the way up the filler tube you could actually put an extra gallon or maybe more than what the tank size is.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

My truck is completely stock. No Modifications whatsoever. Stock tires as well.

And I fill up at the same station and at the same pump, most of the time. I always wait for the foam, and acutally use the slowest setting when filling up, in order to prevent the foam problem.

A few folks remarked about the tank holding only so much fuel. None of that matters, since this is about fual consumption. So, if I fill to the brim, and then it claims 22 gallons, I should fill to the brim, and put in 22 gallons. I think that makes sense.

I guess I just feel it should be accurate. That is what it is there for. To give accurate mileage and fuel useage calculations. I am not asking for total perfection but 2 gallons per fill, is quite a bit. And, it makes ALL the information it provides, useless. May as well flash 12:00, like my VCR !!!!

Thanks again for the posts!!!

Ok, how about we look at it the other way, my truck is stock with stock tires and according to my buddies GPS system (he's been grumbling that when I say I'm doing 72 I'm only doing maybe 69+) which he put in my truck for a day or two my speedo says I'm doing 72 but the GPS says that I am only doing 69.2. So according to that, I am giving up milage on the warranty, etc., but does help prevent speeding tickets.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif But if the GPS is accurate, I should be able to put those 265's on and it would correct the speedo and look much better??http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Have you checked your oil?

Sprint,

Your speedometer being off, does not mean your odometer is off. Have him GPS you on a long run going staight, to verify if you are off on miles travelled. Also, it is important NEVER to lose satellite reception when doing the test, or the mileage on the GPS would be innacurate too.

Plus the speedometer can be calibrated. However , good luck with GM, because their "tolerances" are about as tight as , well, they are not tight, let's just put it that way.

Another of my gripes is that my truck leans (squats) on the bakc left side 1 inch. (even when fuel is empty) The suspension shop says I have a sagging leaf spring. Guess what GM says? RIGHT, it is within their tolerances.

I've found that number of gallons is further off when I am towing. When I'm not towing, its within a few tenths. When towing, it can be off a couple of gallons.

I get the same results as ronadycks does. Mine is all stock except what is listed in my sig. My MPG reported by the DIC has been off by the same amount from when I picked it up from the dealer. I fill up at the slowest setting on the fuel hose and don't go past the first cutoff. I just use the fuel guage and fill up when it hits 1/4 tank.

I don't think mine says how many gals. I've used.....unless I just haven't seen that yet! I know mine has Range, trip, instant mpg, and avg. mpg. I think mine is pretty accurate because I've run it down to where it showed I have 16 miles to go and it took 25 gal. to fill up!! It's a short bed and the tank is 26 gal. I think, so that works out about right.

Also, I get over 400 miles to a tank, and my avg. mpg on the DIC is around 16, which is pretty close.

I can't really complain about my DIC....works good for me!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

Ronadycks,

We are going to redo it again this weekend but he seriously thinks that both the speedo and the milage are off. I know that his truck is a 8.1 gasser with the Allison and he is always giving me a hard time about how slow I'm going (his truck says 68-69) and I'm telling him I'm going 72-73. I know we constantly argue about the exact milage also, he always has a few less and I keep telling him it's my wheelspin.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif If it is off that 3 to 4 percent, I'm gonna put those 265's on and that should balance out the speedo and the milage?

hi sprintmod1,

Here is a site (link below) that may help in determining the difference you can expect once you add the larger tires! For you , it may make sense if the Odometer is not accurate. Me being a tweaker, I would still want that fixed, because as you mentioned.. You are sorta being cheated on the total miles driven. That is not fair to you! Then , at least, the figures will be in your favor! Get my meaning? If the odometer is calibrated, and then you add the larger tires, you will then 'slow' down the odometer to your favor!

Either way, the GPS is a great tool to help you figure this stuff out. But , as i mentioned, find a nice long stretch of highway to do it. That way, you can be assured of accurate GPS readings.

Anyways, hope this site helps... Let me know.

sprintmod,

As a followup, you need to input your stock tire size, and then input the desired tire you are going to put on the truck.

For example in the box, type in both your stock size and then the new tire size below it. for example...

235/75r16 (stock , for instance)

265/70r16 (desired new tire)

It will then give you the revolutions per mile, and the percentage difference! Kinda neat!
