: How good is the Oil Life system?

Opinions/Facts Please. I know how the oil life sensor works and have read the information here on the forum. What I would like to know is:

With 30% oil life left per the indicator:

(a) how many highway miles would you drive until your next LOF?

(b) would you tow a medium load? (13,500 GVW)

As you might have guessed, I'm at about 30% and have a trip coming up and wonder if I should change the oil before leaving. I don't expect to travel more than about 1500~1700 miles, some mountains, towing our TT. Total towing milage would be about 1000.

Thanks!

How many miles do have on it since you last changed?

IMO I would do it as soon as you get back from the trip.

last change was at 13,500 and I have 20,350 on it now... Will definately do a change when I get back, but wondering if it's cool for the trip... I think oil life system is based on a 10,000 mile window, so I'm figurin' that I've got about 3000 left on the current fluid.

I had last changed my oil towards the end of September. After the winter driving, the DIC was on pace to hit 0% at about the 7,000 mile mark.

I finally broke down and changed my oil over the fourth of July week-end. I had 8,948 miles on the oil and the DIC was showing 15%. So, if I had continued and went to 0%, I would have had about 10,527 miles on that oil. I was running Mobil Delvac 1 and replaced it with Mobil 1 Truck & SUV.Edited by: Darin Billing

My change oil light seems to come on between 7 and 8K. I would not go over 7500 miles anyway and definately not with just a single filter. I run a bypass filter and probably could run more miles than I do but oil is cheap and motors are not.

Im wondering if this device becomes unreliable with a programmer...

Anyone know?

The program takes temperature and throttle position into account so if you run your motor hard enough to create more heat it should shorten the oil change time. But I'm sure a programmer throws all the oil programming out the window and you should go by miles and how you run your truck and make your own best guess as when to servive your truck. Just for your information on all 2004 sold in Canada the dealers cannot make recommendations, It is up to the truck's computer to tell you when to do what and as far as the oil change goes you should be notified at 600 miles before your oil change, cross your fingers.

good luck
