I took my G30 1-ton van to a local garage for brake work and it has been a comedy of errors. First they ordered rotors with 5 lugs instead of 8. Then they ordered and installed the wrong G30 rotors and then stripped the lugs tryng to force the old lug nuts on. They are replacing those rotors as I write this, but they are saying the problem was that my 1995 G30 really used R30 brakes. They say the G30 is a light-duty van (baloney) and that mine has heavy duty R30 brakes for some reason. They clearly don't know what they are doing but after 2 days of replacing rotors and $700 in charges they are (I hope) near finishing.
My question is what is up with the R30 rotors? Are they wrong again? All the info I can find on R30 trucks are they were not made after 1988. Why would they need to be on my 1995 van? My brakes MAY be P30 brakes since P30 trucks and G30 vans have basically the same frames, but R30s were pre-ABS. I thought you needed ABS rotors on ABS systems. Won't that be a problem? Any help would be appreciated.
UPDATE: When I asked the mechanic about R30s not being made after 1988 he said R30 was the frame designator not a truck designator. I think he's full if it.
UPDATE #2: Ok, they finally did what they should have done two days ago and called the dealer with the vin. They finally got the correct rotors and are putting them on.
