I was driving along in my 04.5 CDT dually 4x4 6spd this weekend when i suddenly heard a grinding noise coming from the left side of the front end.....It almost sounded like something was rubbing together.....I pulled over to check for probs and did not notice anything...... Everything seemed tight and couldnt find anything that seemed to be out of wack or loose...I then got back in and drove for approximately 5 miles before it started again....Stopped got out and looked again, but couldnt see anything wrong...Even tryed bouncing the front end by hand but could not hear anything.....Turned my tires all the way in both directions then put it in 4x4 to see if it was maybe the 4x4 drive line but no noise......It was only happening when i was on a bumpy part of the road, you could really notice it when its a big bump, so bad i was really getting worried about driving it anymore...Got back in and drove off and hasnt happened since....been approximately 300 miles and did not notice it again...Anybody had the same noise???? Or any clue as to what that was??? My truck has 2,100 miles and I dont have the vibe....

It could have been the cooling fan rubbing the fan schroud(sp) when you hit bumps or you put torque on the motor and it moved enough to twist a little. It may have worn off the spot that was touching or under smooth conditions it doesn't touch. This problem can sound like a small ticking sound all the way to a growl depending on how severe it is.

Thanks for the reply bluemax....But i think i just found the culprit.....I just got a replacement grill guard put on and the didnt screw the wheel well liner back in....I guess when i was driving and heard the sound it was that because there is a V cut out of it where it was rubbing on the tire.......Not to mention i was going into a pretty storng head wind....I cant believe i didnt notice it the other day....Sure sounded bad but i believe it was the prob...

Brandon507,

ASSume you have now screwed the liner back in. Glad you found it. Just another 'pilot error'.

Ya I know, thats what it get for doubting my new ride huh!!!! Those screws that are holding the liner in are plastic, so i replaced them with metal ones......Actually i didnt install the grill guard the dealer did... Edited by: brandon507

I had the same problem with mine. Every screw was in place for the plastic wheel well protectors. When I hit a bump I would notice a noise. I investigated and found the same thing. I gave it 1000 miles and it went away. I rotated my tires at 5k and still didn't notice it again. Maybe just a new tire thing.
