: lowered dually pics
jeeptjs 11-20-2006, 08:18 PM Thinking about lowering my 02 2wd dually anyone else around here done this already and have any pics or advise on kits? I have been looking at air ride technology for the upwards adjustability since crew cab long boxs and speed bumps don't mix to well.
carhauler 11-20-2006, 08:30 PM jeeptjs. Air rides kit is too low and does not raise high enough for bumps, my 04 was lowered 3/5 and I scraped the trans crossmember pretty often ,I have spoke to a few guys with Air rides kit and it rides like a caddy and will still haul anything a regular truck will , I had a Ground Force Kit and was not real happy but it hauled at 25 thou + for 91,000 miles with no problems. I am getting ready to do a Air Lift road tamer modifyed to lower it 6 inches and will likley to DJM lower arms in front. Also get ready , Lowered trucks will stir up a lot of naysayers.
The Neens 11-20-2006, 08:53 PM Recently did a 3-6" on my '02...DJM lower control arms in the front and shackles and hangers in the rear...Rides ok with Rancho 9000s...New pic in garage shortly...
GTA23109a 11-20-2006, 09:08 PM Just had mine done. DJM shackle/hangar in the rear and lowered 2" in front by cranking down the torsion bars. Also had a custom fireston airbag/tank/compressor setup built for the rear. IT's not too low, actually, it looks like "stock" should have. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow.
ArmyMechanic 11-21-2006, 12:21 PM Got a 5/7 on my '96 dually. Easy install.. minus cutting of the frame for the c-notch.. i have little trouble with bumping and I only scraped my fender one time. had it on for about 15000 miles. Im taking it off though.. didnt have the effect i wanted. also i dont haul anything but a small boat...
1lowdiesel 11-21-2006, 12:34 PM static drops are ok but not very pratical. i love my air ride. as for the Air Ride tech kit it's a little pricey if ya ask me.
GTA23109a 11-21-2006, 06:07 PM Here's my lowered dually. Believe it or not, it was dropped 5" in the rear and 2" in the front.
carhauler 11-21-2006, 06:33 PM GTA, Nice , like you said it looks like it should have from the factory , much more user friendly? How did you do the air bags. ( off the spring or off the axle in where the bumps stops are)
GTA23109a 11-21-2006, 10:17 PM MUCH more user friendly!! My GN trailer doesn't try to run into my bed if I go through a wierd incline and my wife doesn't need help getting into the cab anymore.
As far as the airbags go, they are actually mounted in board of the frame rails. The frame over the rear bumpstops was boxed so it could support a custom "L" bracket that mounts the upper portion of the bag. The bottom of the bag sits on top of the axle. There's still good clearance on the Pass. side for my 4" exhaust and there's no worries about frame-to-axle clearance that you'd have with the lowered suspension in the "normal" airbag location. All the ideas, design and fabrication work was done by my friend and fellow D-maxer, Mike, who goes by "motivational" here on DP.
Chvymtl3 11-22-2006, 09:10 AM GTA, that does look good. How does it ride both front and back axles. I don't haul much, but I want to keep a good ride. Does the suspension bottom out very much?
Thanks
GTA23109a 11-22-2006, 03:11 PM It rides about the same as stock. The front is a little softer with the bars cranked down and the rear still gets that unloaded freeway-bounce, but overall there's really not much change. It's not so low that it bottoms out, even with my GN in tow. I just feed the airbags whatever they need to keep the ride-height correct.
Chvymtl3 11-22-2006, 04:23 PM What I meant by "bottom out" is the susension hitting the bump stops, not scraping the asphalt.
Thanks for the info. I would like it to sit a little lower, to get rid of more of the fender well.
thanks
GTA23109a 11-22-2006, 05:04 PM What I meant by "bottom out" is the susension hitting the bump stops, not scraping the asphalt.
LOL, yah I got that. That's what I meant. It doesn't hit the stops on me even towing. I still have room with the DJM stuff to go down about another 2" in the rear, but it almost looks too low compared to the front, so I leave it like it is in the pics.

ratpowered67 11-26-2006, 04:25 PM brock4x that truck is sick! i love it. i want to do the djm 6/8 drop ssoooo bad, thats mainly why i bought my truck.but i just bought a new 27ft bumper pull travel trailer and now i have doubts doin it. i thought about going the 3/5 instead, but now lookin at your truck, i want to go all the way. ive heard bad stories about c-notching the frame, and towing heavy loads, but i thing most of it is bs. where do you mount the rear bag brackes with the cut frame? do you haul heavy loads? my camper is ony 5000lbs. so i think i will be safe doing this, do you crape bottom often? are you going bigger wheels later? thanks for your help,,,rat
brock4x 11-26-2006, 06:48 PM Thanks for the compliments...I say go fo the 6/8! You won't regret it. I do tow a 30' triple axle enclosed that is ridiculously tongue heavy because of my tool box, generator, fuel jug rack and golf cart all in the front (go to my garage to see a pic of the trailer). I have had no problems at all except for locating a hitch with enough rise for use with the factory reciever and still have enough load capacity to carry my trailer. I doubt your camper is anywhere close to the weight of my trailer and therefore you should have no problems finding a hitch to carry your load. Another option is to get a roll pan and a hidden hitch to gain a few extra inches (one of my plans for the future if I don't sell my truck). The c-notch is nothing to worry about...I was skeptical myself at first, but now that I have tried it, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
The bags are a breeze to mount, just order the universal AirRide Technologies behind the axle kit and drill a few holes in the frame to locate it and you're finished.
As far as scraping....I have not scraped one time in 25000 miles, but I also have had many lowered trucks before ths one, so I think the expereince comes in handy. Just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine.
I do/did have plans for bigger wheels... I actually have steel 19.5" inners with a tire to test fit, but I have since ran out of money and it might be a while before I complete my project. Let me know if you are planning to do the 19.5" deal and I will make you a smoking deal on the inners. Where is Tenton, TX? Good luck with yours and keep in touch.

Man that truck is so kick*ss. One of the nicest dually's I've seen. Would love to own it but I'm currently in massive amounts of debt with GM. lol
Craig M 12-20-2006, 11:02 AM What size are the 24" tires?
