OK guys, need your help. My daughter put gas in my son-in-laws Powerstroke. Drove it less then 25 miles with the gas in it until the engine started to run very ruff. Had it towed in to a shop. My question is what needs to be replaced and what damage should be looked for. Any and all help would be appreciated.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

How many gallons did she add to how large of a tank and did she "top it off" like I teach my daughters?
At least it was a Ford.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

It was almost empty and she filled it. Even tho it's a Ford, it only had less then 4000 miles on it. My son-in-law has said that after driving my DMax he wanted to trade it, now just may the chance he was looking for.
Ouch!
Seems to me like the first step is drain the gas, change all the filters, fill it with diesel and a good lubricity additive and see what it sounds like.
We run F**d PSD powered ambulances at the Fire Station, and needless to say that particular trick has been done several times with them. Usually the shops just does what I've outlined and things seem to have worked out, but I don't think any of them has managed 25 miles before it was discovered.
Just my two cents.

Well at least it has happened to someone else without to many problems. I take it that after the above procedure was done that the engines seemed to run Ok. When she called me (she lives in California) she just knew that she had ruined the whole engine and it was going to be a full engine rebuild. Thanks Zeeb I will pass along that maybe she didn't do to much damagehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

It happened to our 2003 PSD. Believe it or not, my pops said he ran the whole tank through!!! But the truck had about 1/4 tank of diesel still and he topped it off. Its a dually. The truck has over 60K on it now and this happened at under 30K.. Edited by: 2MuchFun

I've had an Amoco-4 bay-2 island w/diesel pump in the same island as fuel (big mistake) for 16yrs now, & believe me this type of contamination happens all the time for me. Most of the time it gets "caught" the same way you did, vehicle begins to run poorly, or is difficult to start (ie-hardly ever a the pump). Then it's back to the shop, drain the tank (i use an electric fuel pump with a 6' sedction of hose), blowback the lines, replace fuel filter, & it's back on the road. Never had a problem yet, just remember that the "winterized" diesel used in northern climates is just diesel fuel cut with kerosene (to aid in the prevention of 'gelling'), both gasoline & kerosene will make parts nice & shiney, but damage nothing in the combustion chamber of a diesel engine - gasoline, unlike kerosene, just won't combust properly in a diesel, hence the rough running & hard start symtoms. But I have never seen any damage done from this mistake. Hope this relieves some tension
Now diesel fuel in a gasoline engine, is another story....
