Was: Should I avoid LB7

Thanks for the feed back,
All I have heard is how much it costs to replace the injectors in the LB7 and how likely they are to go bad. Is that covered under the motor’s warranty, 200k or what ever it is?

Read your warranty book for this information. The 01 and 02 trucks got an extended injector warranty to 200,000 miles. The 03 trucks still have the original 100,000 mile warranty.

Since you didn't provide details, I don't know if you own a truck already, or what year, so I hope these generalizations help.

As for cost of replacement, if under warranty, GM pays. If you've already replaced, GM reimburses for 01 and 02. If you have an 03 which is already beyond warranty coverage, you drive alot! And I'd submit my bills to GM and hope they'd consider reimbursement on an individual basis at this point.

Good luck,

w/o a truck I am also w/o a manual,

Makes sense to me.

Trying to do your research, make sure you take everything you read on the forums with a "grain of salt." You'll find really helpful, expert advice here, but you'll also probably get the impression that problems are more frequent than they really are. Such is the nature of internet forums.

Bottom line is this, most of us love our Duramax diesels and even those who've had injector replacements still are satisfied overall. If everything else is right about the truck you like, just be reassured that the extended warranty will help protect you from financial loss if you experience the dreaded injector failure. There is still the very real time (and time is money) loss while your truck is in for repairs, and the headaches of finding a qualified dealership with technicians trained specifically on the Duramax. Those are real issues to consider, too.

Good luck.

Let me know what you are looking for. I have a dealer in Missouri that is really working hard to sell new and used trucks. I bought an 04.5 for under invoice, and an 03 way below NADA trade in.

I would worry about a truck being pulled to death. Check for a 5th wheel hitch hole and make sure regular maintenance was done. I have pulled mine to death, but because of regular and proper service I would drive them into the ground.

As a matter a fact I have one on e-bay right now.

Something to remember.............

These forums bring out the facts and magnify a lot of otherwise not heard of problems......

Last check we have 6309 members......

How many had injector problems..............maybe a dozen.

If GM is warrantied them then why worry.

The new policy is all 8 get changed to the new design......so buy one and enjoy it. If you are worried get a GMPP extended warranty and drive worry free, just like new.

The LB7 is proven to be reliable and can make tons of HP/TQ very easily...........2001's and 2002's for the most part have 7yr/100k on the injectors and 5yr/100k on the entire engine.

I had an injector go bad on me on my PCS drive to alaska.

Injector stuck open somehow, and flooded the cylinder with fuel. This caused the piston and rod to break. The engine was still functional and would run however it sounded like a powerstroke. GM, no questions (other than about my banks stickers "I like their stuff and plan on getting some in the future" I had pulled the 6 gun while on the side of the road and stowed it in my wifes backpack) whatsoever. it took 2 weeks for them to replace the engine since it had to be sent to arizona from Michigan, but it was installed and my new engine has more a$$ than the "stock" engine did right off the lot. It probably helped that I was a stranded servicemember that needed to continue the march like yesterday as well, but GM didn't do me wrong.

One note on that: The senior service tech who actually did the work on my truck talked with me. He knew that my story was BS but the shop manager was satisfied. He said that in no way was the chip responsible for what happened, and he said that I also made a good choice in what to run in terms of longevity of the motor and drivetrain. I asked him about break-in for the new motor especially since I was going to drive to the back lot of the dealership and immediately had to hitch up and continue onto alaska with my trailer. He said that even if I had the option of driving it around without the trailer, it wouldn't matter to the engine. Drive it like you stole it!

Don't know if the '04 injectors have the extended warranty, but I would hope that they do. I still have a LB7 engine in 'er and I like it.Edited by: SpoolinTurbo

2 weeks, that blows. Probably ate up all your per diem and didn't even have a billiting to stay at to save you some money.

Your lucky it didn't happen any farther north. That's what I am afraid of and will probably be my luck when I drive back up there.

yeah it burned me good. At least the finance up here worked to hook me up on some stuff that I should have been entitled to but wasn't... lol
