Doesn't seem like anyone has talked much about making an aftermarket intercooler that is bigger than stock. I don't know enough about diesels to know if this might make a power difference, but I know with a gasser, the bigger the intercooler, the cooler the air, the more O2, the more power, etc., etc.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Dennis

On a gasser, the intercooler is usually much smaller that the radiator, so there is room to increase its size. On the Duramax, the intercooler is the same size as the radiator so perhaps it could be made deeper, but its width and height are probably as big as possible. Making it thicker could hurt engine and transmission cooling.
I think there could be some increased efficiency and HP with larger inlets and outlets, expecially is matched with new plumbing from the turbo, and intake. This would be even more valuable if a new turbo and intake would ever be released that had larger openings, but even necking down at the last minute would still allow for less pressure loss in the bends.
Perhaps some companies has played around with this, and just not found enough improvement on the dyno to justify the cost.
On Edit:
I wish someone would make a front grill that would remove the Chevy symbol and thick horizontal bar. These must be blocking alot of airflow to the intercooler, tranny cooler, radiator, and A/C.Edited by: Amric

There is one....made by sawzallhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifEdited by: Got Juice?
I have been planning the same thing for the grill since day one. I'm thinking about using the real woven wire screen stuff the 01 grill is supposed to look like. Any super handy metal guys out there with more time than me want to try? I bet it would be very popular.

Amric,
Thanks, I was looking at it the other day, and it sure does cover the entire radiator. Seems like you could make it thicker, increasing the volume. You're probably right about the testing.
Thanks,
Dennis
