: horn inop (intermittent)
dirty old man 11-18-2006, 11:06 AM Did a search with no success on this problem.
Living in a small town with not too many traffic problems I seldom use the horn (stock 2003).
But twice lately, once yesterday, I have tried to blow the horn and it was inop. Both times I waited till I was out away from other trafic afterwards and after repeatedly pressing the horn button it finally blew.
Anybody else had this problem? Are the horns wired directly thru the button or is there a relay?
Dave
GM.Tech 11-18-2006, 12:49 PM LOTS of problems with the horns getting water in them. GM has come out with new design horns with a shield. I looked for the TSB but couldn't find it for some reason. I'm sure this is your problem, but see if you have power and ground at the horn when you try to beep it just to be sure.
DURAtotheMAX 11-18-2006, 03:04 PM if you dont have power/ground at the horn terminals, you can check the horn switch and BCM wires "manually", but its much easier with a Tech 2 because it can check the function of the switch, wiring, clockspring, BCM, and horn relay all without taking anything apart or crawling under the dash...

GM.Tech 11-18-2006, 07:56 PM Also, if you have a factory remote control and you can beep the horn with the panic button, that eliminates the horns, relay, wiring from BCM, etc. Kinda narrows it down to the steering column (buttons, SIR coil, etc.). I still say look for water in the horns.
dirty old man 11-18-2006, 08:27 PM Right now it's working OK, but next time it malfunctions I'll try the alarm button on the remote to try and narrow it down.
BTW, what is the SIR coil and where is it?

VIOLENTJR 11-18-2006, 09:52 PM Gm Has A T.s.b. Out To Add An Extra Ground Strap To The Steering Column. I Will Get The Number For Ya If You Need It.
GM.Tech 11-18-2006, 10:12 PM BTW, what is the SIR coil and where is it?
Dave
SIR = Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (air bag). It's just below the steering wheel and is what makes all the electrical connections between the wheel and the column.
DURAtotheMAX 11-19-2006, 12:26 AM although if your airbag light isnt on and your steering wheel audio buttons still work, its probably not the clockspring/airbag coil...
99% chance its just water in the horns. Mine do the same thing sometimes. If I drive thru a large puddle in the rain or mud, the low note horn stops working and I only get the high note horn. Sounds stupid for 2-3 days, then they both start working again.
BlueOx03 11-20-2006, 12:58 AM Check the relay in the under hood fuse box. Mine gave me heel for a bit, some how the contacts got dirty...

:exactly: Mine did the same thing, Change the Grey Omron relay and you will probably be good to go. I've had to change the high, low, running lights and Windshield washer pump relays in the past two years. I grabbed a bunch from the wreckers and keep them in my glove box now.):h
Quick check, interchange it with another relay and test the horn. When my washer pump stopped I would turn it on and off several times before it would work and finally it just died.
Super Dave 11-20-2006, 05:48 PM I keep losing one of the notes on my horn as well. It never comes back though. I end up taking it to the stealer and they return it to me with both notes. Are they simply taking something apart and letting it dry out? They haven't ever charged me, so I haven't asked them about what they're doing to fix the problem. Is this something I can fix myself? It seems to happen a couple times a year.
Thanks,
Dave
