On a recent 3500 mile trip, I begin hearing a heavy ticking noise like a lifter that was not pumping up. Did it on and off for a about 600 miles. Seemed to run ok. Maybe a little rough but not really bad. Is this an indication of an injector acting up? A lifter?

I bought my truck about a month ago with 73,000 miles and I have noticed that same noise about 25% of the time I drive it. I have asked a couple dealer mechanics about it and they have no answers.

The famous Duramax tick-tick some have it some don't. Been a lot of talk about it here, Do a search and you can read all about it.

It was much louder than the famous ticking at idle. Very obvious even running down the road.

Mine is most noticible at idle. I heard another person on this forum refer to it a a typewriter ticking noise (erratic ticking), but the solution was not mentioned.

Could it be that the balance rates are off or an injector out of time, or is it definitely a bad injector? Mine does it too. Seems like it is louder when under a slight load about 2000 rpm.

This does not sound like the typewriter tick that mine had. It was really bad at idle. I could not hear it while driving. The dealer told me that some had the tick, but mine quit before I could take it back.


Truck was bought brand new and the noise quit after a few thousand miles. I had read that it usually did.


I don't think his problem is the same thing. I drive mine pretty hard on a daily basis pulling a 4000lb. cargo trailer. I have 27,000 miles on mine since Dec. 27, 2003 and have not heard it again.

I'm just curious. This is my first diesel. I hear an occassional tick tick at start up. Does the serpentine belt make that noise too??? At least that is what I thought it was. Does this mean that I may have a bad injector???

Also, keep in mind we have solid roller lifters, so there is nothing to pump up as far as the lifter goes.
