Gentlemen,
I am looking at trading up from my gas silverado to a d/a model, and besides lurking and learning alot on this site, I was wondering what your opinions are on the costs and value of gm extended warranties. Do you need to negotiate price on these as well? Are any "better" than others? I would not be planning on modifying the truck anytime soon. I have done gmbuypower and internet shopping, but before I step into a dealers domain I would like to already know what "else" will raise the bottom line $. thanks, Luke

I have a 6 year GMPP on my 2000 K3500 that I use for plowing but does not see many miles (it only has 27k on it now) and I have not made any cliams on it but I will be before winter as I am having trouble with the left front gland nut loosening up from time to time when a plow is mounted. (did it twice last winter) The deallr that sold me mine sold it at 50 over cost and I have zero deductable too! Given all that can go wrong with even newer 4x4's it may be a sound investment.

snoman,
How did you find out the dealer cost for the plan, unless you are "friends" with him/her? I too think the added security on a truck of this value is probably a good investment, as long as I don't overpay for it. luke

Where in NJ are you? The dealer I bought my trucks from is Colonial Motors they been in North Branch. They been there over 50 years. They are GMC only they sell only Trucks. the big GMC too. I have all ways bought my trucks there.

There service is the best I have ever seen, they even repaired one of my plow trucks in a blizzard when all other shops where closed.

There on RT 22 west 5 to 8 miles from RT 287

I also recommend the GMPP warranty. Most dealers that I have talked to try to sell you a "better" warranty(BIG Lie). They also try to make a couple of extra grand on the sale. I contacted a texas dealer that I found on this web site that offered a reasonable rate for the GMPP.

The prices on extended warranties are seriously inflated. If the dealer isn't willing to drop the price -- a lot -- then I wouldn't do it.

Just for comparison sake... on my wife's 01 Mitsubishi Montero Sport the dealer wanted $1900 for the 100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper extended warranty. By the time I was done with him it cost $1050. That's close to 50% off, and I guarantee they still made money.

Bottom line? I think they're worth it, but only if you keep the truck for a while and if you get the delaer to lower the price.

Iv always bought GMPP plans and have never had any trouble getting repairs no matter where I was, Its the after market ones that the salesmen and Credit Unions & banks try to sell you that are nothing but junk, one of the better after market warranty company's just folded last year and left thousands of buyers with no coverage at all, another thing about the GMPP plan is when your talking to the Lienance Manager (Finance Manager), which is where it will be offer to you, the price on it just like the truck, is up for negotiation, and if they wont come down in price for the GMPP warranty, you can call other GM dealers and buy the plan from them.
