: 12K of MPG data for new LLY
blakeb 07-16-2004, 06:59 AM I hear people saying that they are getting between 12 and 20 miles to the gallon with their LLYs. Here's what I've gotten since I have had the truck.

I live south of Atlanta, and work north of Atlanta, so most of the miles are interstate at 70+, with about half of each commute in the bumper to bumper traffic Atlanta is know for.
Is any one else keep up with each tank?
guitarman 07-16-2004, 08:47 AM I have logged every mile since day one, almost 9000 miles, average mpg 16.13........one R/T Decatur TX - Asheville NC towing ~3000 lbs, other than that 3/4 highway, the rest town and ranch, lots of idling while doing 2 minute chores that end up taking 20 minutes. All the 1/2 tons I ever had got ~13 so I'm doing fine
TEXMudder 07-16-2004, 09:25 AM Yep, I keep a similar spread sheet. Of course my numbers are lower, but it sounds like you do a ton more highway miles than me.
I must have a good one. Some of my towing mileage is better than that. Towed my Boat to Sam Rayburn and back on one tank. 365 miles on right at 26g of gas at the Gas station. Its no featherweight boat either approx 3000#+.
I am admittedly a conservative driver though. Every vehicle i have ever driven i have been able to get the most out of gas mileage. The DMAX is changing me slowly, cuz its fun to stomp on it. Unloaded my avg DIC is always above 19. Reality is 17-19 mpg Hand calcd. Last tank was 455miles @ 25.5 gallons which is a little low for me. Per tank unloaded commuting to work i usually see 450-475m a tank(24.5g to 25.5g per fill up). My goal is to get 20mpg on one tank. I just don't do any highway driving unloaded.

TEXMudder 07-16-2004, 12:02 PM Ok, here is the screen print from mine. While the numbers are better than my 6.0L, they are still no where near the numbers I see people posting about. Most of my driving 90% is city miles (Dallas) and my firends say I drive like an old man (no lead foot).

Rollin' Thunder 07-16-2004, 12:29 PM Here's mine with 6,800 miles (2,500 towing 11,000 lb fifth wheel from Indiana to California)....

you're running 2wd - less weight and no tranfer case

The other variable is average speed to determine whether there is a lot of idling, slow or stop and go driving.
Ray403Dmax 07-16-2004, 01:33 PM Weight definitely matters, but I also have 4wd and consistently do 17-18 mpgs overall per tank, unloaded in mixed driving conditions. For me, it has a lot to do with pulling away from the stop lights in the low RPM torque band. I rarely throttle over 1850 to 1900 rpms while driving in stop and go traffic with the regular juice on #2 setting. Now that has to qualify as driving like an old man.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Xfer case don't amount to big gas mileage diffs.
Obviously the style of driving is the biggest factor. My wife drove my truck for a week and could not get the DIC out of 15mpg range.
cbmkr 08-04-2004, 08:50 AM just returned from south dakota truck loaded no trailer 1200 plus miles average on total trip 18.7. will be heading to canada later this week full load and passengers w/extra fuel.
no chips no exhaust amsoil 5w 30 hd oil and filters
previous trip to canada 3 weeks ago south dakota, north dakota route increased speed took about 1.7 mpg of the top does better at 75 mph or below
new 4/17/04 now has 12k miles
Diesel Tech 08-04-2004, 12:02 PM These number are inline with what I get here in Los Angeles. I drive 34 miles to 50 miles each day in LA traffic on the freeways. The freeways will run at about 70 mph once in awhile but most of the time it 35 mph - 50 mph traffic. I average 16.4 mpg but I would love the fuel prices you guys are paying, here it's $2.00 per gallon and up!
YUKONDMAX 10-02-2004, 11:58 AM Really nice to see people telling the truth about mileage!!!! My LLY sucks at towing in the mountain's in northern Canada! Usually around the 10 mpg range towing a 26' travel trailer.
coyotekid 10-02-2004, 01:52 PM This sounds really similar to my results so far. I've only got 1500 miles on my extended cab short box 4X4, but if I drive semi-conservatively I can average above 16 mpg highway driving. However, I tend to let mine idle a fair amount for warm-up and cool down, so that factors in as well. I also live in Montana, so there is very little flat land.
**Side note: It probably didn't help my milage much when I just had to pull a very large hill on the interstate (I think it's a 7% grade.) while running against the speed limiter! Thrifty, no, but I wanted to show my buddy with a 454 who was boss. Surprisingly enough, he was able to keep up with me unloaded. I'd like to hook up some trailers, though.
WyRam 10-02-2004, 08:10 PM Really nice to see people telling the truth about mileage!!!! My LLY sucks at towing in the mountain's in northern Canada! Usually around the 10 mpg range towing a 26' travel trailer. 10s not as bad as it seems towing in the mountains.
Gruffid 10-03-2004, 08:36 AM I have about 6k on the truck now. I usually drive mixed highway/in-city and get from 16-18 mpg. My best tank was from Alamogordo, NM to Durango, CO unloaded: 20.6 mpg. (light pedal)
I had a '99 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 ext cab S/B 5.3L A/T that would get similar mixed driving mileage (16-18 mpg - very light pedal). I bought it in January '04, traded it in June '04 for the D-Max. But it also had a camper shell - I think that helped (the D-Max doesn't have a shell yet). I owned it for about five months, never took it on any long trips, so I can't say about highway mileage.
DRCook 10-03-2004, 08:31 PM I have been getting the same kind of mileage that is indicated here. I fill my tank to where I can see the diesel in the fuel neck so I know I am getting the same amount of fuel each time. Then I use a calculator to check the mileage.
We get 16.5 combined all the time. We get 18+ on strictly highway. This is with 5000 miles on the truck.
I am currently trying Sunoco Supreme diesel to see how it does. My truck hates BP diesel, it pings, is noisy, gets lousy mpg. I have been running Marathon diesel from a high volume dealer. The truck runs good on it.
I also run Stanadyne Perf Formula. I noticed when I mix it heavy, I get 17.5 combined. Anyone have any thoughts on this fact?
