: straight axle conversion at stock height?

Is there a kit out there or a way to do a straight axle conversion without the end result being huge. I think it would look good to have the straight axle with the stock look or a small lift. Anybody?

most kits that i have found run about 2"-3" on top of what were spring height you get. like ORU

if you can find some stock height spring you will be really close to stock and still be able to run 33" with no prob
or have some factor replacement made form place like national spring or denver springs for about 300$ a set or so......
or if you can find some of the factor reverse curve spring to lesen the height change

i think 8" is the minimum height. 5" from the axle and 3" from the spring arch

so, stock springs off of a F-250 or something like that wouldn't work?

The minimum spring we recommend is a 3.5", giving you a total lift height of 6.5". I've done conversions with smaller springs, it's difficult & the springs have a negative arch.---Superduty springs cannot be used with our kit (ORU). The standard kit requires 88-91 K% or Suburban springs, and the premium ride kit uses a custom built spring that is 6" longer to the rear.

you can use the superduty springs and Im building my own hangers and stuff...its not too bad. It will sit basicly like a ford. Used a 01 superduty Dana 60 and go from there. Im gonna do one on my daily driver this winter.

I've seen one with no major lift, sat about the same or just a little above a Super Duty. Looked good, not much of the axle was visible without looking hard.

thats the plan here....

I wish someone would put a stock or close to stock height kit together. I'd buy one ASAP. I don't see lifting my truck more that 3-4".

That's awesome, exactly what I would do if I had the shop necessary for the project.

If you measure the center to center on the frame of the HD's, you'll see that it's right on 32". Super Dutys have a 38" spring pad width, so the hangers would be way outside the frame rails up front, and have to go below the frame @ the shackle mount. This can be done, and has (full throttle), but it's not the cleanest setup. And there would be no way to keep it @ stock ride height.

^^^ 2nd that ...

Also if you a Super Duty axle you can run the risk of rubbing the inside of tires on the springs. Because the spring perch span is wider than other axles used for SAC kits.

If you already answered this question, I apologize, but if you just welded new spring perches on the axle at 32" and use super duty springs, would it work then?

Drivers side perch on HP60's are cast into the diff housing, this pretty much dictates the WMS to spring perch distance for both sides. You could source out a 78-79 Ford HP60 housing (king pin style)which has 32" spring perch width but it moves the driveshaft closer to the centerline of the frame which may cause some clearance issues.
Another solution would be to use the later model housing but shorten the longside axle tube (6")and run DRW hubs to get the WMS measurement back where you want it for tire clearance.

Also Super Suty springs are 3" wide and the casting perch is for a 2.5" spring. There is alot to think of here that adds up to not be as straght forward as it seems.

If you retube the axle, both tubes will have to be replaced. Another negative thing about the Super Duty axle is the bolt pattern, not the same as the chevy. And don't forget about the unit brgs.....

so you're saying that I'm going to need an older ford axle for this to work, right? not the newer super duty axle.

Our kit requires either a 77-79 Ford D60, a new axle from us (ORU), or an axle from Dynatrac.

I am going to try a radius arm on mine similar to Ford and Dodge. You can set the height via link length and spring height. I am looking for just enough to level it out.

Depends on your fab skills. Shortening a newer (80 to 91) housing isn't all that hard (I did my own for the jeep I'm building) and they are typically cheaper than the 78-79 housings. If you have a good welder, oxy/acet rig and a good chop saw you can do the housing work yourself and shop out the inner axle cut/respline, I had that done and cryo treated for less than $200 including shipping. Just depends how much you want to do yourself.

i would stay away from superduty dana 60s all together trust me i just went through all that non sense. My last truck an 02 superduty was running 40" hawgs and i went though 3 sets of front bearings. HORRIBLE DESIGN!!!!!
